In the interview, Ann Romney also sketched out her own requirements for what she'd like to see in a running mate, saying the person should be "someone that obviously can do the job but will be able to carry through with some of the other responsibilities." She said the person should be someone who will have her husband's back and who he will enjoy being around him and have "the same personality type." She added: "Competent, capable and willing to serve this country. I think there's lots of good people out there that fill that bill right now."

Earlier this week, Romney and his wife huddled Tuesday at the estate for at least 45 minutes with campaign manager Matt Rhoades, senior adviser Beth Myers and top strategist Stuart Stevens on the deck that overlooks the lawn behind his home. Romney's five sons particularly his eldest son, Tagg also serve as informal political advisers, and all have been on hand all week, virtually assuring that the campaign and the running mate search were being discussed.

Me thinks Ann Romney has a lot of input into her husband's decisions.

(16 posts)Look, I am just a bit older than Mitt, and was born and raised LDS (Mormon).
Like me, Mitt is old school.. unlike me, Mitt takes this stuff very seriously.
When Mitt and I were kids (Ironically I was born in Detroit, my parents went to the same Church (but not ward) and my mother used to watch some of the Romney klan in our home), we were taught that not only were people of color sinners in a past life, and had ZERO chance of getting to the Celestial Kingdom unless they came back in the next life less sin free and white, but that women were subservient to men.
To this day there is NOT one person in power in the LDS church that is a woman.. NOT ONE.
We were taught that there will be a great Mormon leader in the presidency days preceding the second coming, this will be the sign it is happening.
There is NO WAY Mitt is going to have a minority or a woman a heartbeat away from leadership under his watch..

(12,272 posts)And other than the construction the Keystone Pipeline, all by himself and repealing Obamacare; what will Romney do?
BTW, I agree with you, Romney wants a white, male VP that shares his beliefs.

(16,916 posts)of the " in) days preceding the second coming" variety...is that every action and event could be seen as the fulfillment of prophesy. If the 2nd Coming hasn't yet happened, ALL days are days preceding the second coming.
Not that I believe in the 2nd coming, I'd just love to see it happen.
If Jesus does show up, I think he'll be plenty pissed, and not at all supportive of the folks who think that Jesus is their puppet.

(13,907 posts)Unless these people are incredibly incompetent, it will be a woman now that Ann Romney has spoken. I think it will be Ayotte.

(308 posts)I don't see Kelly Ayotte being that attractive a candidate to women. She seems very non-descript and dull to me, and she doesn't really have a lot of experience, either, so I wouldn't be surprised if she gets Romney into trouble on a few occasions. And I think picking a woman would overshadow Romney, and bring back memories of Palin.
Most people have never heard of her and wouldn't putting another New Englander on the ticket turn off conservatives?
So I still don't see it happening. I still don't believe a woman will be chosen so soon after Palin.

Another New Englander? Naw. If female, a Southerner or Westerner.

(308 posts)There's not too much to choose from in those regions.
In the Western states (Washington, Oregon, California), all 6 Senators are Democrats, and I don't see any Republican female Governors of those states, either.
In the South there are a few more options, but not many. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas is retiring, Gov. Susanna Martinez of New Mexico has already criticized Romney's immigration policy, and Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina is such a bad campaigner she couldn't even deliver S.C. to Romney in the primaries despite being his surrogate. Haley also has some baggage because of some of the scandals around her and the outgoing Lieutenant Governor etc.
