Hillary Clintons Campaign Outstrips Sanders and OMalley in Staff Diversity
In the aftermath of what turned out to bedisastrous appearances by presidential hopefuls over the weekend, two campaigns are beginning to rethink how they connect with non-white audiences.
Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley made a litany of mistakes at a Netroots Nation town hall in Phoenix. Confronted by#BlackLivesMatter activists, neither had a good and immediate answer to questions presented by the protesters. While OMalley made an almost immediate course correction, it took the Sanders camp a full 48 hours and a viral hashtag to realize the depth of the mess it was (and still is) in.
In the coming days, both teams will have to reckon with how to make meaningful connections with diverse constituencies including African Americans, who make up to one-fourth to a full half of Democratic primary voters in major state contests. For instance, non-white voters account for 56 percent of Democratic primary voters in South Carolina, the third state in the process.

(316 posts)I agree that Sanders and O'Malley need more diversity on their staffs but isn't it true that Clinton's staff is a lot larger? I would assume that Sanders and O'Malley will both have diverse staffs when they are able to hire more people.

(316 posts)From the group that released this study:
The Bernie Sanders campaign has updated us with their current numbers. As our press release called for, this is a great first step in transparency from their campaign.
"51 people on staff, 13 are minorities including African-Americans, Latinos and Asians. That's more than 25 percent."

Thank you for finding that.

(67,782 posts)Interesting that the Sanders campaign has just done what Sanders followers have always accused Clinton of doing - they got bad news so they came up with "new" numbers.
Going from 10% to 25% in a couple of weeks and still having a staff reported at just 51, that would mean that just about everyone added since the July 1 numbers would have to have been minorities. Curious.

(84,711 posts)who will match Diversity to the Game Plan.
That's not a surprise. I applaud her ...but, then she has the Money to Do that and that should Not be Overlooked. She has huge advantage with Name Recognition, Husband who was Former President and her Role as SOS.
We now allow Foreign Money to infiltrate our Elections and Hillary as SOS made many connections and so did Bill and Chelsea through their Connections with Wall Street and Other Resources via Clinton Foundation.
That's why many of us discount much about the Polls and the Diversity of Hillary's Campaign...because she has such an Enormous Advantage.
America should not be an Oligarchy....where only the Entitled are allowed to Participate to Buy the Media and Think Tank Expertise to "Model a Campaign for U.S. President."
That's why many of us are seeking alternatives. The Clinton Policy Alone and its Aftermath on our American Economy should be enough...but, adding the Baggage I've pointed out above even adds more to the discontent out there in America today.
Fine...support her...but, realize that many of us Politically Active Democrats who are old enough to remember Clinton I and before are rethinking. And, the young people suffering are going to be even more active in how they feel about the direction our country is going.
We shall see how it all turns out.

(86,013 posts)Gabi Domenzain, director of public engagement for O'Malley, blasted Inclusv for releasing these numbers, which she said they know to be false.
While Inclusv's report said no Latinos work for the former governor's campaign, Domenzain, a Latina, joined OMalleys campaign prior to his announcement. Her name was not listed under payroll disbursements in the July quarterly filing, but HuffPost observed that OMalleys campaign reported paying Dominion Payroll Services for payroll expense." (Persons paid through payroll services and volunteers arent included in Inclusv's analysis.)

So is this where we are going with the campaigns? Who has the most People of color on their staff? here is the rest of what Taylor wrote:
And before media outlets seize on this news, I would caution them to examine their own houses. The press corps (and mastheads) that will cover 2016 are as lily white as the campaigns they will cover.
Campaigns that hope to make meaningful strides in terms of energizing black voters, who matched or outstripped turnout by their white counterparts in 2008 and 2012, should start by hiring highly qualified African-American staffers at every level of the organization and I dont mean just minority outreach. They can do a better job as engaging high-level consultants from diverse backgrounds that supply digital support, media buying, direct mail, and other key campaign functions.
In short, they should be who they say they are: progressive and Democrat. Anything else is just talk.
Boo on this OP. I am sorry, but this is a boo from me. Taylor is not saying the thing that is seems like you are trying impress in this OP.

(2,431 posts)Most people will just forget about the influence of Citizens United (unlimited cash for Hillary) and go with "diversity." Her Illithid marketing guru probably makes a lot of money, too. Illithids are vastly under-represented in this campaign.

(52,172 posts)but there are some issues here. One can presume that Hillary has more staff in later states than either O'Malley or Sanders and that all of them hired locals in the states. That would lead to her having more minorities as paid staff since the very early states are rather white.

(12,335 posts)I don't really get too involved in threads about the Primaries but will make an exception this time and recommend this thread.
The amount of staff diversity is very important and is an indicator of how that candidate would fill Cabinet positions, etc. It is early in the campaigns and Hillary has had more time and more money to hire staff, but this should be an incentive for the other candidates to do the same.

Clearly we have not reached that dream yet. If anyone actually needed to be told that. The real issue that we should be discussing is how either (or both) candidates can help PoC achieve that dream and how we can help them along that route faster. Not hurting each other with our words.
