Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders destroyed John Boehner with facts after the Speaker called him out of the political mainstream on CBSs Face The Nation.
Earlier on Face The Nation, Speaker of the House John Boehner said that Bernie Sanders came to Congress as a socialist and that both Sanders and Hillary Clinton are out of step with mainstream America.
In a later segment when Bernie Sanders appeared on the same program, he destroyed Boehner with the facts.

Transcript via Face The Nation:
SANDERS: All right. Well, let me respond to that issue by issue. And you determine who is out of the mainstream.
I want to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. A recent Wall Street Journal poll said a majority of the American people want to do that. John Boehner is not going to bring up any legislation in the House to raise the minimum wage at all. And many of his members want to do away with the concept of the minimum wage.
I want to see this country expand Social Security benefits, not cut them. John Boehner, his party want to either privatize Social Security or cut Social Security benefits to the elderly and disabled vets. The American people say overwhelmingly we have got to expand Social Security benefits by lifting the cap on taxable incomes.
I want to create millions of jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure. And I have introduced legislation to do that. Republican Party is very reluctant to spend a nickel to rebuild our infrastructure.
Bernie Sanders listed a series of positions that show that John Boehner and the Republican Party are completely out of step with mainstream America. In fact, the list of Republican positions that are out of step is much longer than what Sanders offered. Republicans oppose a path to citizenship and comprehensive immigration reform, Republicans are against equal pay for women and allowing women to control their own medical decisions. John Boehner spent millions of taxpayer dollars defending the Defense of Marriage Act. Boehner supports cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans and corporations while opposing any legislation that would create jobs.
It is clear who is out of step with the mainstream of this country, and it isnt Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic Party. John Boehner has a 22% approval rating and a 62% disapproval rating. Despite the fact that the country is moving left, Speaker Boehner continues to harbor the delusion that the United States is a conservative nation.
The facts were on the side of the Senator from Vermont, and Bernie Sanders used those facts to reveal that it is Boehner and his Republican Party who are out of step with the rest of the country.

(1,309 posts)and the more she has , the more voters will resent it. She is becoming the symbol of hated superpacs, the big banks, Wall Street, multinational Corporations, her husbands failed trade policy, and the more she talks, the more we are reminded of her parsing the issues to suit her big donors. As we say in Kentucky, what side are you on, Mrs. Clinton? It sure does not look like ours.
Bernie sure looks like the leading Democrat to me if democrat means looking out for economic and social justice. We need a big change and she ain't it!

(57,936 posts)Higher taxes are not the only issue of importance to the American people.
As Europeans realize, taxes are like anything else. it isn't how much you pay for them but the value that you get in return that makes the difference.
If we pay higher taxes and just get more wars and make more trouble in other countries, Americans rightfully object to higher taxes.
But if we pay higher taxes and get free college tuition and better healthcare than we could purchase if we tried to pay for those things on our own, then the taxes are worth it.
Take college tuition. If we pay for college costs with taxes that we pay as we go along rather than through paying interest on college loans, a lot of people who want to go into lower paying jobs that do great things for society will be able to do that. The cost or risk of going into a field like teaching that pays less in the long run than going into a field like working for Wall Street be possible. If society pays for the education of our brightest and bests as a common project with tax revenue, then creative young people can afford to do what they do best without worrying about repaying personal loans.
Americans have been taught to think only about how high taxes are and not about what the tax money is used to do or buy. That's foolish.
We could have a much better society if we worked together and watched what Congress is doing with tax policy and with budgets. Bernie Sanders is on the Budget Committee. He understands the budget process. That's one reason I think he will make a good president. He knows where the bodies are buried when it comes to the US fiscal policy. He will know where and how to save tax money.

(534 posts)Both parties have neglected the needs of the average, working person. Both have neglected those needs TO THEIR OWN DETRIMENT. Oh, the Democrats are quick to defend the almost-mythical (and ever shrinking) "middle class," but none of them ever think of doing anything to ease the immense suffering of the poor in this country, who might have become "middle class," had they been given any real opportunity. It is a crying disgrace that the wealthiest nation in history allows people to work for what Bernie calls "starvation wages." And everyone I know who has struggled in this economy is aware that it is getting worse, not better. Meanwhile, Bernie has the persuasive statistics to show that, while all the new money went to the One Percent Club, everyone else got shafted. More importantly, Bernie has the guts to stand up and say that before God and the rest of the world!
Bernie will not allow this "pickpocketing of the commoners" to continue. People are connecting the dots: Nothing has trickled down for 30 years, the wealthy are rolling in it, the souls of our journalists and politicians have been bought and paid for by corporate blood money, and real solutions to VITALLY IMPORTANT problems, such as global warming, are being stifled by the One Percent Club, who want to continue our fossil-fuel-induced, comatose, zombified destruction of our home planet. If that doesn't call for a revolution (as Bernie has called for one), I don't know what does.

(5,178 posts)Yes, it is insanity.
Why I take umbrage sometimes with articles which state the views of Boner don't match mainstream America. If mainstream Americans are adding weight to the scales tipping democracy in favor of Wall St, then does it matter what they say, or even, how they may or may not bother to vote?
It is no secret, we all have to live with the best representation mainstream Americans can pay for. They know full well what they are accomplishing. Ignorance is no longer an option.
We can regulate, create good jobs, bring back democratic capitalism, turn corporations back into slaves and the slaves into people again, provide more basic services and save money and possibly even life itself. Failure is not an option.

He realizes that many Americans are frustrated, overworked or in despair and this is not being talked about in the Mainstream Media except by the few honest ones like him, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and others who see the corruption and know the game is rigged.
All the new wealth in the US has been going to the very top, even as regular people work harder, are more productive and are struggling, all of which Sanders recognizes and emphasizes. Stop voting for Republicans who are working for millionaire and billionaire donors not the people's interests! he says, and Sanders intends to campaign in Red States not just Blue States.
I remember when WV was a citadel of labor that put JFK in the Democratic Primary in 1960 for which he was grateful. The state of WV was solid blue like many others until Reagan. Change always comes, and we can count on it.

(45,251 posts)somehow gets to be a plus for Bernie, Hillary and the Democratic Party, rather than a plus for Bernie.
As Bernie said during that same show, there are significant differences between and Hillary on issue after issue. And the Democratic Party has lagged considerably behind Bernie. See my sig line for just one example.

(8 posts)Hi,
I'm all for Bernie. Gosh what a breath of fresh air in our political system. I was wondering if Bernie has an opinion (or vote) of when we should use our military might. I realize how much he is for adverting disastrous conflicts (i.e. Iraq) but I was wondering if he has a strong statement of when and how we should use our military.
Thanks !!

(332 posts)He did his usual stellar job of answering inane questions by pivoting to the core issues which need to be addressed.
Tavis Smiley bitch-slapped the Face the Nation staff for their Trump is just like Sanders roundtable setup. Then during the general discussion he routinely corrected the musings of Dickerson, Jeffrey Golberg and Peggy Noonan back toward reality. A really impressive job; I know he is a TV guy but, he was an adult among children!
