(5,167 posts)I doubt he's really content in D.C. He has many quibbles with Democratic policy, but likely doesn't see himself as a Republican.

(5,167 posts)WV is not likely to elect another Democratic Senator for a while.
They just replaced in 2014 a Dem. (Rockefeller) with a Rep. (Moore-Capito).

(112,217 posts)Might have to abandon Senate bid if he is headed towards the Republican nomination.

(32,685 posts)Portman is toast.
No Vested Interest
(5,167 posts)somewhat concerned about Strickland's age. Although he appears quite chipper, he's in his 70's, as am I, but I believe the electorate, in general, prefers younger candidates over older ones.

He has money and contacts, but, unfortunately, has generated local controversy by flip-flop - er, changing his mind- on his campaign promise, as well as saying he would drop out of the Senate race if Strickland entered. Br, other than that, PG has quite a future.i

(5,167 posts)And what is the difference between retirement and not seeking re-election?

(54,397 posts)I've heard of Senator Sanders and Senator Leahy. If Vermont has a third Senator, I want to know how they managed to get away with it!

(613 posts)Any chance McCain retires?

(32,016 posts)He said they died quickly after retirement. I think he thinks that will happen to him. He is doing the things you do when you are running for reelection. He is raising money. He has not announced yet but I think he will run and that is the reason no one yet has announced for the position. If he runs the Tea Party will run someone against him but they have little money. He is well liked in the state by mainstream Republicans and I don't think he would be defeated.
Reter
(2,188 posts)He beat Stockman in the last primary, and the Tea Party is far weaker now. And you forgot Rand Paul, who will run for President.
