2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat will Romney losing to Obama mean for the GOP?
At first I was disappointed that Romney will be facing Obama rather than Newt or Santorum. I wanted extreme GOP supporters to see how out of step their views were to the rest of the country and get them to stop advocating anti-woman, anti-gay and anti-worker positions. I thought a Romney loss would be easy for the GOP to explain. "Once again" they will say "we strayed from our ideals and went middle-of-the-road so of course we lost." (Also I think Newt or Santorun would be easier to beat)
But then it occurred to me that when Romney's loss is viewed that way by the GOP the next round of candidates will be more extreme even than Newt and Santorun and be even MORE offensive to the mainstream voter. THat may make it easier for a president Hillary or Grayson or whoever in 2016.
Romney's loss could be the event that drives the GOP over the edge for quite a while.
Any other possible outcomes?

(15 posts)The GOP knew that this year was all but out of reach, barring the mass lobotomy of the 55% of the country whom they hate with a passion.
Every single GOP candidate this year were their loony bin leftovers, all unelectable and un-nominatable as well.
2016 will be their big guns, the "sane" ones who will galvanize them for another viable run after 4 more years of hyperbolic lies and incendiary rhetoric. They aqre just holding firm until then, because it was evident from the get-go this cycle who their nominee was going to be, an trust me..NO WASP driven Republican is comfortable with a Morman at the wheel...there was just no stopping him this time.

(26,549 posts)Even with a true believer, they would have claimed they strayed from their ideals.
What needs to happen is not only a Romney loss, but large-scale losses down-ticket. That will really bring the crazy out in 2016, resulting in another massive loss.

(64 posts)With John McCain and Sarah Palin being the best they could do in 2008, and Mitt Romney being the best they can do in 2012, their slide into the same abyss the Whig Party went to is imminent. Most of the right wingers I meet every day say they are staying home because Cain, Santorum or Gingrich isn't in the race. They are giving up. I truly believe we will have a supermajority in the Senate and the House by the 2016 election, if not this year.
They are on the wrong side of history now, the dustbin awaits them.

(32,100 posts)They're stepping aside while their shit hits the fan. They take what they can, game the system as much as they can in their own favor, and then sit back and let the Dems clean up their mess. And, the blame for anything that goes wrong (or too slowly) gets heaped onto the Democratic President, too They do it every time.

(35,703 posts)Particularly if the Dems take back the House and hold the Senate.
I think there would be a moderate chance of a party split.

(22,000 posts)-It will drive them to try to cheat even more
-It will drive them to spend more corporate money they they already do
-It will (hopefully) make gay Republicans realize their party has thrown them under the bus for a long time
-It will drive them so f-ing nuts and we will hear another 4 years of psychobabble about a black man being president from the racists
-It will (hopefully) make Fox News announce the end of the world is coming and make all Republicans jump of a cliff (said splatting sound would be enormous yet satisfying like an orgasm)
And yes you are correct, it will renew calls for a more rightwing even nuttier nominee the next time around.
That felt good.....
