house committee advances nationwide abortion ban

(and the war on women continues apace)

House Committee Advances Nationwide Abortion Ban

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee voted 20 to 12 along party lines to approve a bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks nationwide. The bill now goes before the full House of Representatives, and could be brought up for debate as early as next week.

The bill, called the Pain Capable Child Protection Act, is sponsored by Trent Franks (R-AZ), and originally applied only to the District of Columbia. However, Franks decided to expand the bill nationwide following the murder conviction of Kermit Gosnell, a rogue doctor who performed illegal abortions in Pennsylvania. The bill does not include exceptions for rape, incest, or fetal abnormality, but does include an exception to save the life of the woman. Franks has introduced the bill in previous sessions of Congress, but it was defeated.

During the committee debate, sponsor Franks echoed other conservative lawmakers in their understanding of rape. Franks successfully dissuaded fellow lawmakers from amending the bill to include an exception from rape by arguing that "the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low." This shows striking similarity to Representative Todd Akin's remark last year, that "...from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

babies every since the 70's when it became apparent that the white race would one day become a minority in these United States. White women have been the biggest benefactor's of affirmative action programs and white women took the bull by the horns and ran with it. With white women attending colleges at higher rates beginning in the 60s and entering the workforce in higher numbers, it was a natural progression that they delayed childbirth and the number of children they had to pursue careers. This is one of the main reasons that the birth rates are now higher for brown people. But it wouldn't be politically correct to say that. So they claim to be for the rights of the unborn while not giving a crap for these babies after they are born.

Especially given the fact that the conservatives have the majority still. Obama has about 41 more months in office. If Ginsburg passes then he has to fill the seat with someone who is going to be reliably liberal. The other possibility is another seat doesn't open up (or both could occur with no one else leaving except Ginsburg). In that case we'd be up shit creek without a paddle unless we win in 2016.

This thread will likely be buried beneath the latest security state outrages, but this should also be a huge outrage. We women are losing our personhood (sorry, that's the only term I can think of at the moment) every day. A law here, a law there, the constant bleating of 'rape doesn't cause pregnancy,' etc. When will it stop? Forget 1950s, they want us back in the 1350s. Thank you, niyad, for posting this.

Just like Congress.

After 9/11, Congress passed, with an almost complete majority, draconian laws to "protect" us from the "terrorists" - without blinking or pausing to f'ing READ what they were making law. Pure knee-jerk that was praised by many, many people as swift and decisive action.

Bills like this rely on similar scare tactics; the reference to Gosnell is carefully crafted to whip up an emotional response.

It has no chance of being taken up in the Senate and if it did, it would fail by close to a 60-40 margin. Even if it somehow squeaked out of the Senate...it's DOA on Obama's desk. In the meanwhile, the GOP continued to fail to address any of the problems facing America.
