(10,893 posts)Republicans seem to really be caught in a bind here. On one hand, they are desperate to shed themselves of their xenophobic image and repair their image with Hispanics, but on the other hand, they risk pissing off their base, plus some Republicans have speculated that only Democrats will benefit politically from this (which might be true).
You almost want to feel sorry for them, but then again, it's their own fault for being so extremist.

(9,136 posts)There probably will be civil war within the GOP whether immigration reform wins or loses (I suspect that it will probably lose). The GOP realists (You can't really call them moderates. Moderates--compared to WHAT???) know that they'll need more than their share of the white vote to keep their grasp on state governments in the western US, but the base--which turns out and votes in force in GOP primaries--won't have ANY immigration reform.
I suspect that right-wing reactionaries in the mid-west and along the northern tier of Great Basin and Great Plains states are safe from the wrath of a changing electorate--but the GOP is going to pay for knee-capping immigration reform in much of the West and in Florida.
I used to think that I ought to sympathize for GOP legislators and Congressional reps. Those days are over. They made their beds--and now they get to sleep in them.
