Christie to hold press conference to outline procedure on filling Lautenberg's seat
TRENTON Gov. Chris Christie this afternoon will hold a news conference to outline his plans for a special election to fill the vacancy left by U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg's death.
The Republican governor is expected to appoint a fellow Republican to the Senate, but first he must decide when to hold the election. He could schedule one before the general election, to coincide with the November election or in November 2014. State law is contradictory in this area, setting the stage for a potential legal battle.
The quandary over the appointment again forces Christie to balance his interest in winning re-election by a large margin in a blue state and gaining support from the Republicans across the country who he will need if he decides to seek his party's nomination for president in 2016.
