making the rounds on FB - don't turn off your Tv on inauguration day, leave it on but

on some channel not showing trumpenstein being sworn in:

"CALL TO ACTION: Don't turn off tv Inauguration Day!
DO NOT TURN OFF TV! Read on.
If you have cable or satellite TV, they keep track of who is watching what. Instead of turning your TV off that day, turn all your TVs on OTHER CHANNELS. Some suggestions would be:

The Science Channel
National Geographic
Discovery
Animal Planet
Comedy Central
or any channel not showing Drumpf

Here's the reason.
If 1000 households are watching TV that day:

400 or 40% are watching Drumpf.
600 or 60% are watching anything else.

With a boycott of 400, you have this:

400 or 67% are watching Drumpf
200 or 33% are watching anything else.

Suddenly, if we turn off the TVs, it looks like a large majority of viewers tuned into Drumpf. But if our TVs are tuned to other shows, the percentage drops.

For Drumpf, to have low ratings AND low percentage, it'll be a blow to his ego. Twitter will be hilarious.

Get it? Got it? Good."

How do I know? Because I've had to acknowledge those warnings on apps for u-verse, directv, and now back on Comcast/xfinity.

DVR viewing and on demand/online viewing only counts if you watch within a certain time frame (either 2 or 3 days).

Democrats Plan Alternate Mega-Concert For Inauguration Day

While there are few actually confirmed details as of now, there's apparently a massive, star-studded "We The People" concert being planned for Miami on the day of Donald Trump's inauguration. The idea is to counter Trump's inauguration and garner higher television ratings than the swearing-in.

Rumored artists include Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Elton John.

Does anyone know if viewership of specific cable channels can be determined via the streaming apps?

(I won't be watching the inauguration. I probably won't even be home. But I will put it on TCM if they can determine viewership)

My hubby's TV has a standard cable set box. I will turn his on and put it on something not inauguration related.

Mon Jan 2, 2017, 04:05 PM

Advertisers pay attention to more than just the Nielsen numbers.

And your cable company can absolutely tell what channel you're tuned to. The question is, do they do anything with that data and can we (the politically awake viewer) influence their actions by tuning in elsewhere.

http://www.ibtimes.com/tv-watching-you-back-comcast-nbcuniversal-data-sharing-plan-raises-privacy-questions-1926903

The change, which will take place at some point during the 2015-2016 broadcast season, promises to supercharge NBCUniversal’s newly announced “audience targeting platform,” or ATP, which combines viewer data from set-top boxes with third-party data about consumers’ behavior, purchase history and interests. Together these sources of information are a powerful indicator of what viewers like and dislike: Over the years, data brokers and retailers have amassed vast troves of information about our most intimate habits, while cable equipment has become more advanced at generating activity data about what shows people watch, when they watch them, and even how many people actually sit through the commercials.

The amount of people that will...

1. Actually see this
2. Act on it after reading it

is statistically insignificant. and even if it wasn't and spread like wildfire the advertisers and networks would know the rating numbers are skewed by this protest and the data is simply going to be tossed out as an outlier. You won't effect anything by doing this, so just do what you personally want to do.

However, a boycott scheme similar to the described above would likely not be very effective regardless if whether viewers had their televisions turned on, off, or changed to something other than Inauguration Day news coverage.

The largest stumbling block to this plan is the assumption that each individual's personal viewership affects a given television program's ratings. This simply isn't the case — unless, of course, that individual is a member of a "Nielsen family."
