as a different tweet. I read some of the responses from people who would be cruel to a kid, well that's your standard Trump voter!!! We know what's in their hearts, they show it at every rally, so no shock they mock his being weak and a beta male, and other immature BS that shows their depravity.
I commend him for being strong willed.

(58,785 posts)What a great kid!
I remember realizing our son was liberal and our daughter distinctly more conservative at those ages after a psychologist explained that orientations were already determined and being displayed in many ways. Boy, was the truth of that immediately obvious when I looked!

(1,151 posts)I actually had a hardcore libertarian phase in my late teen years (mostly because I bought into the idea that libertarianism would magically produce prosperity for all), after being mainstream liberal as a younger teen. Ironically, that phase led me to reexamine socialism which is where I'm at now, though I've grown somewhat less doctrinaire.

(50,567 posts)The libertarian doctrine that "I can take care of myself better than the government can" sounds good until you find out two things: the government isn't "taking care of anyone" and if they were, some people really need it.

(1,151 posts)then wouldn't such flings be far less frequent? unless I'm overexaggerating the point. My attraction to libertarianism wasn't even that, though, it was more like "the system is fucked because the evil gubmint is fucking everything up", this was in the wake of the crisis.

(58,785 posts)Liberal and conservative are the 2, or the 2 main, personality orientations.
From all this come our political orientations, and I've read that most people actually hold a broad range of political opinions, our overall orientation identified by the whole.
"Libertarian" personality, btw, is quite different from either and may just be its own type, which is why I think of true libertarians versus temporary or fad ones (such as possibly the Lib Party's presidential and VP candidates this year). Both liberals and conservatives have full baskets of values and are altruistic toward others--cons to those in their circles, liberals to larger groups, but still similar.
True libertarians by personality (strongly suspect Paul Ryan is one) have one main moral--personal liberty. All other morals are strongly subjugated to that in various degrees depending on how "strong" the libertarianism; in some, other values may be almost nonexistent. And they are very low in altruism. These aren't people who risk their lives for others or who sacrifice anything for the wellbeing of others. The glorification of selfishness in their philosophy comes from the gut. It really is all about "me" for them. Fortunately, true libertarians are thought to be only maybe...13% of the population.
The rest are "shopping cart" versions, mostly conservatives, who adopt a few positions they like, such as no or very low taxes, and don't understand the rest.

(20,219 posts)I knew about the innate nature of liberalism vs conservatism, but hadn't seen anything about libertarianism.
Well, hardwired libertarianism sure sounds like psychopathy, which is also genetically linked and exhibits brain differences--smaller amygdalla than the norm.

(16,193 posts)unfortunately the people who need it often get scraps or nothing.

(15,382 posts)Perhaps I'm not very tuned in to the ways that age/sex/education/background influence how we look at things like politics, sexual orientation, racism/classism/tribalism but I think most of us go through several stages of identification and re-indentification as we age/mature.
Having had several children mature through several life phases, I'm willing to accept that most normal creatures do the same. My hope is that we can nurture these explorations all along the way, even if they are against our own currently-held views.

(21,056 posts)Seriously, this is how confident and smart every child should be. If he heard negative "Oh Lord!" reactions, he should smile and say just getting the country ready for the next president! Or I'm with her! Lol. I'm sure he has already got some clever responses ready, because one does not simply dress as the first female president and not have a witty retort!
Thank you so much for the smile. Truly!!!
