2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumYES! They just said on MSNBC that there will be NO
applause, cheers or booing during the debate on Monday! That will NOT be helpful to Trump. Any nasty, ignorant thing that comes out of his pie-hole will just hang in the air to stink up the place. Also, repeating empty phrases and yelling "Believe me" etc. won't evoke any cheering from his stupid supporters....unless, of course, his supporters have been told to ignore the rules and turn it into a rally...sh**...I wish I hadn't thought of that.

(34,845 posts)I agree with you, it just seems pointless to have a crowd of mutes watching a televised debate.

Seth MacFarlane? @SethMacFarlane
Here's an idea: Lose the damn studio audience at the debates. No one cares about hearing their circus noises. Treat it like Kennedy/Nixon.

They should have people doing a flying trapeze act overhead and peanut & cotton candy sellers walking through the set hawking their goods.
I am beyond flabbergasted that it has come to this. That so many Americans a planning to vote for such a cretin as Trump. I am mortified.

(24,089 posts)I don't remember any presidential debates where there was any form of audience participation. Looking forward to Donald experiencing the sound of one hand clapping. Surely that will throw him off his game of insults and ridicule.

(18,319 posts)I'm going to a party-sponsored debate watching event. We're kicking off the night with a small rally (we have a permit) at Hofstra.
Trump might have supporters on Long Island, but he doesn't have an organization on the ground. I haven't been able to find any Trump or RNC sponsored events taking place on LI on Monday.

(14,837 posts)Tickets don't get distributed based on location. Hell, only 10 tickets go to horses students. Just 10, and they paid for the place!
I wouldn't worry about locals tilting the mix. The tickets aren't given out that way.

(52,791 posts)They should have to watch it on a remote screen on another floor.. Then they can boo and cheer to their little hearts content, and the candidates won't be able to hear them.

Though it wouldn't surprise me if the networks have the crowd mic'd too,
regardless of their admonitions. Hey its showbiz after all.

(47,209 posts)Voiced wise crack I made to a friend - about the warm up comic, who sucked- and they came over within a minute and gave me a final warning that I'd be ejected if I did that again. They had given us strict instructions and much prompting to applaud when told to, but not to act up. Wasn't talking loud at all, and they got me!
lindysalsagal
(20,730 posts)The network can control that. I hope it's true.
underthematrix
(5,811 posts)They can mute the sound and never ever show the audience so the TV audience omly hears the debaters and moderator
annabanana
(52,791 posts)muted or not
They'd have to be in a different room so HE couldn't hear them...
Mike Nelson
(9,966 posts)...the audience entirely. They should have the press there, and each side can have 20 staff/family/friends. The audience cheering or booing either side takes time away from the people who need to hear the candidates speak about their positions.

(6,446 posts)Trump fans will shout and jeer. Unfortunately to a TV audience, that may appear as if the live audience favors Trump. Hopefully they will be able to kick the troublemakers out, or at least screen really well.

Expect the whole thing to wind up in a brawl - literally - about 15 minutes
in and that's the end of debating.

PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,895 posts)how can this be enforced? And even if directional mikes are used, so that the TV audience doesn't hear anything, everyone else in the room will.
Better to have no audience at all. Just the candidates, a moderator, and whatever other people are needed to operate cameras and so on.
Oh, and the primary debates should likewise be without audience.
Mamajami
(257 posts)Why does an audience have to be present?
bucolic_frolic
(43,286 posts)I think there should be no debates, just 1.5 hours to each candidate to
answer questions from a moderator or moderator panel
The theater element that Trump is using to bolster his image is not
relevant to the presidency
