NEW YORK (AP) Rudolph Giuliani, who earned the nickname Americas Mayor for his leadership in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, has emerged as a far more divisive figure during this tumultuous American summer, advising Donald Trump and scolding activists railing against police violence.
Giuliani has not held public office since 2001, but he has asserted himself on a pair of inflammatory issues that are helping shape this years White House race.
A former federal prosecutor and a Republican who served eight years leading deeply liberal New York City, Giuliani has long linked himself to law enforcement.
He took up that mantle again after last weeks two fatal shootings of African-American men by police and then the killing of five police officers in Dallas. Though many public figures followed up with pleas for unity, Giuliani fiercely criticized the Black Lives Matter movement, saying it encouraged violence against police.

(71,265 posts)Dinkins was not a good mayor but the race Rudy ran against him was divisive. Rudy may have revitalized Manhattan but he did nothing for the outer boroughs.
His canonization after 911 made me sick.

(36,437 posts)A common saying I heard in my outer borough neighborhood the first time: "Fuck the Moolie, vote for Giuli." That was the speed and intent of the Giuliani campaign BOTH times.

(36,437 posts)Giuliani was always a divisive figure, and was one of the most openly racist mayors in the history of New York City.
This is some seriously revisionist history. Giuliani used to shrug and laugh when NYPD cops gunned down innocent black New Yorkers.
