Related: About this forumWho do you think Hillary will pick for VP
Here's what I have seen for the short list but welcome to hear other thoughts on who the best choice would be for VP.
Personally I think Hillary needs to go young, exciting and 'outside the box'. She needs to bring in young voters and excite those voters who tend to only vote every 4 years if the will inspires them. I know Tom Kaine has been high on the list but I think he would bore voters. Hillary needs to go with someone like Julian Castro, Cory Booker or Elizabeth Warren - 3 people I think would help get those voters excited!

(27,315 posts)I'd go with Brown, but he would be replaced by a GOP.

(95,337 posts)We all want to get rid of our current Mayor and the Mayor's race is usually decided in the primaries (there is a general election but our city is like 9-to-1 favoring the democrats). Eugene Young is probably the youngest of the Dems hoping to unseat incumbant Dennis Williams. Young also use to work for Booker. I swear if Young brought Booker in to stump for him he'd probably win this race. Currently we are worried Williams will win because of too many candidates in the primaries.

(13,444 posts)By dark horse, I mean someone almost no one is discussing as a possibility. Someone like Martin O'Malley.

(58,785 posts)So far there's not one vote for Tim Kaine, and yet he's major. Several for young Castro, who begs comparisons to little Danny Quayle.
Sherrod Brown would turn over a Senate seat to the Republicans, and as one commentator put it, "When has Hillary ever been a risk taker?"
I want Warren--an economic reformer who adds an electricity many have commented on, like Perez a lot too, but think I may be voting for Clinton-Kaine.

(20,176 posts)as a fan of neither Castro or Kaine...the comparison would fit the dull-headed conservative Democrat from VA much better than the former HUD Sec. from TX. Kaine's consideration should be zero. He brings only negatives and no positives whatsoever to the ticket.
If Hillary picks him...personally, I think progressives and LGBTQ people should take it as a slap in the face.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)redoubtable and committed economic reformer. Kaine is hardly my favorite choice, but he is also a progressive reformer and, according to his long record, a good and caring man.
One of the strengths of the Democratic Party, and why its will is by far the strongest reflection of the American people, is that it's made up of broadly diverse factions, politically, socially, and so on. If she chose Kaine it would never be with a callous indifference to any major faction, which definitely includes the many millions energized by Warren and then Sanders, but in an earnest attempt to satisfy all enough to win this election.
The reality that a silly buffoon like Trump, and those shadow operators who hope to run and manipulate our nation through him, could actually win hit home again last night. Also, with the third-party candidacies, there is a real possibility that the House Republican majority could choose our president, and the Senate Republican majority our vice president.
So my best suggestion is, maybe tuck some spare emotional energy away---just in case the worst that could happen turns out not to be even close?
Chan790
(20,176 posts)he's a proud center-right Democrat who has treated progressives like the true enemy for more than 20 years.
I don't need to tuck away the emotional energy...we need to be vocal that he's not an acceptable choice and no matter how much Hillary wants him (if she wants him), that he needs to be dismissed from consideration. It's a dealbreaker for me and it should be for any Democrat that doesn't want to see the party move to the right, regardless who they supported in the primaries.

(58,785 posts)different definitions of progressive however.
Traditionally, progressive means using the power of institutions and government to advance society. (A local church can be progressive.)
Although many moderate conservatives used to be at least partly progressive, for the past four decades conservatives have become increasingly anti-government to the point that most had become implacably opposed to progressive programs. Lumping Kaine with them would not be...appropriate.
In any case, this definition recognizes the success made possible by bringing together all who want to use government to solve problems too large to take on otherwise. FDR was progressive by this definition, even if he was so determined to protect the establishment and privileged elites like him that many on the far left of his day came to hate him and see him as a major enemy of their brand of progressivism. Which, by their definition, he was.

(1,532 posts)I really like Becerra, but he seems to be off the short list.
Former Obama advisors, Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer, were discussing her possible VP picks on their podcast, Keepin' It 1600. In their opinion, if she was doing well against Trump in the polls, she'd go with a "safe" pick like Kaine. If she wasn't doing well, she'd pick someone like Warren to shake things up. Not sure I agree with their analysis, but it was interesting. They've both endorsed Hillary.

(4,640 posts)I think that Hillary will pick who she sees as best fit for her. This person is someone who has to be willing to work WITH her, that she has some chemistry with on a personal level (or it's going to be a loooong term of ewww why'd I do that? for both people). I trust her to make the right choice.
