April Burbank
Burlington Free Press
Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign has asked permission to hold a rally in Philadelphia on July 24, the eve of the Democratic National Convention.
The permit application for the event which would involve an estimated 15,000 to 40,000 people in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park is one of ten applications filed with the Philadelphia mayor's office for pro-Sanders protests, marches and demonstrations during the convention.
Several events have already secured approval, including multiple "March for Bernie" events throughout the week organized by activist Billy Taylor and a "Black Men for Bernie" rally on July 27-28, according to a list provided by the mayor's office.
Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs was quoted in June telling the website Philly.com that Sanders would deliver a "victory statement" at the proposed July 24 rally. Reached Tuesday, Briggs declined to share details.

If there is anyone showing poor judgement in this campaign, it is NOT HIllary.

(1,674 posts)Clintons have made major blunders recently. not Bernie, Best to proceed with eyes open, no one is taking this GE for granted. Liz nor Obama have sparked any enthusiasm. With any luck, Bernie will sway a few to vote Dem to save us from Trump. Instead of constantly critisizing Bernie, you should support him, but no, you are still talking primary. He has moved on.
lunamagica
(9,967 posts)The convention is a crucial week where the Democrats need to show a united, winning front. The focus need to be on that.
And if you think that neither Warren or Obama have not sparked any enthusiasm, I don't know what campaign you are following.
Also, he has NOT moved on. In order to move on, he needs to concede.
spud_demon
(76 posts)The draft of the Dem platform did include a number of victories for Bernie's movement. Assuming the Hillary mainstream is still backing those principles when the Convention starts, it is cause to celebrate.
I'm not sure what you mean by "concede". He has said he thinks Hillary will be nominated and that Trump would be a disaster. If he followed your advice and "moved on", he wouldn't be Bernie Sanders.
Lord Magus
(1,999 posts)It means he's pretending that it's not actually a certainty, and thus he still has some small chance himself.
spud_demon
(76 posts)He said she would be, which is the opposite of that.
Lord Magus
(1,999 posts)By saying she'll "probably" be the nominee makes it seem like Bernie thinks the situation is no different than back in April and May when he was behind but victory was still mathematically possible.

Divide the attention between the convention and Sanders rallies and his ego-feeding "marches for Bernie" and who wins? TRUMP.
How is this helping a Democratic win in November? How is this "Doing everything to defeat trump"?
Is he planning something similar for the GOP convention? No. I guess he doesn't want to take attention away from them during THEIR convention.
livetohike
(22,172 posts)So his disinterest in helping the Democratic nominee and then scheduling a rally where he is the center if attention is derogatory.

(1,674 posts)vote. He has to answer to 12 million dems and 40 million indys. Hillary has enough support and is critical of the peoples preferences. He does not work just for the party, he works for all the americans. The party represents the minority of americans, the movement takes all comers. His interest is in defeating Trump so he will support Hillary, but is going to be too busy to campaign for her
metroins
(2,550 posts)If you want to be realistic, Bernie hasn't done anything substantial for 25 years, he's not about to do it now.
He doesn't have to answer to anybody, and Hillary IS the people's preference. She WON.
If you're expecting Bernie to lead a movement, that is fantasy. He's faded since California and since he's not campaigning for Hillary, he's going to fade back to a quiet Senator after the convention.
If you're looking for a leader of your movement, you better find a new one.
larkrake
(1,674 posts)to Hillarys candidacy. Bernie does not care if he fades as long as his downticket gets elected. His agenda is seeing to change in the next 3 elections . This one is done and no changes will occur from the white house- it will all be in congressional seats and progressives. 3rd wayers have won their last election this year.

ehrnst
(32,640 posts)Amendments are tweaks to the work other people completed. And "amendment king" is a common meme cited by Bernie supporters who don't really understand what that is in terms of actual legislation.
Hillary actually got more legislation to the Senate floor than Bernie did in his whole time in the senate (even accounting for the naming of post offices and such.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2016/04/07/hillary-clinton-was-a-more-effective-lawmaker-than-bernie-sanders/
Bernie couldn't work with other progressives. That's common knowledge.

He has a tendency to take credit for things that aren't really his to take credit for, but his followers need as much validation as they can get.

They all know he is fighting for them, that has never been doubted. He is not allied with corporations or wall street nor has he written absurd trade deals, or been riddled with scandals for 30 years. 3rd way has.
Nothing is black or white. Righteousness is in the eye of the beholder. I happen to think we are all entitled to a happy life, 3rd way is content to keep us in debt and stress

larkrake
(1,674 posts)tonyt53
(5,737 posts)None of them have received any financial support from him and he has done no fundraising to help the DNC, which sends money to all Democrats running for office in the General Election. This does matter.

(1,999 posts)And personally I don't see it as helping the downticket to support primary challengers to incumbent Democrats. Only under extreme circumstances should that be done.

(6,551 posts)The Democratic Party convention is a time for all to unite behind the nominated candidate. Translation: it's Hillary Week.
Several Sanders demonstrations in no way helps Clinton or Democratic party unity. Instead of focusing on what's happening on the convention floor, the media will focus on the demonstrations and play up the disunity, because that is what they do.
By far, the most important objective is to defeat Trump. In no way are Sanders' actions supporting that objective.

It looks to me like people are doing their best. Hillary is a product and she doesn't fly off of the shelf as fast as some would like. All the marketing in the world won't change that.

There's already a road divide with a fence in the way, not to mention a gigantic parking lot. And right now they are putting up many more fences.
So they won't see the DNC and the DNC won't see them.
