Dolly Parton Is Proud of Her Gay Fans and Hillary Clinton

"Dolly Parton is in the middle of her biggest North American tour in 25 years, with dates in more than 60 cities. But she expects to be even busier during the next year. Ms. Parton, 70, one of country music’s most enduring entertainers, is developing a TV series based on her life, releasing two albums — including this summer’s “Pure & Simple,” with new, original songs — and celebrating 50 years of marriage with her husband, Carl Dean.

Ms. Parton, who will play Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on Saturday and the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J., on Sunday, spoke by phone from a tour stop in Cincinnati, weighing in on the presidential election and a recent country music scandal. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

How do you feel about a female presidential nominee?

Well, I think that that would be wonderful. Hillary might make as good a president as anybody ever has. I think no matter if it’s Hillary or Donald Trump, we’re gonna be plagued with PMS either way — presidential mood swings! But I personally think a woman would do a great job. I think Hillary’s very qualified. So if she gets it, I’ll certainly be behind her.

How do you feel when people come to your shows dressed as you?

I think it’s fun! You know, we usually have boys all dressed like me, and so when I do “Jolene” and I see a bunch of drag queens out there, I start singing [to the tune of the “Jolene” chorus] “drag queen, drag queen, drag queen! Please don’t take my man!” [Laughing] I have a huge gay following, and I’m proud of them. Sometimes some of them look more like me than I do.

I find her interviews highly entertaining!

I don't listen to country music (nor rock either). But that film convinced me how utterly awesome Dolly Parton is.

Dolly, Jane, and the incredible Lily Tomlin (way under-rated).

It is one of those films one could watch over and over again. BTW, I also like Dabney Coleman, a great comedic actor, who had to be an awfully good feminist to film that.

Dabney played that role so well! It's so hard to find a movie where the chemistry is so good between the cast.

I agree with you about Tomlin!

OK I'm gonna have to watch it again today lol!
