(28,017 posts)There are a few GOPers who would give Hillary a run for her money.
First on the list would by that reptilian wolf in sheep's clothing, Gov. Kasich. He sounds so, well, polite, and realistic, until you look at the substance of his ideas.
Romney may be pushed into it, too. Frankly, his health care plan was better than Hillary's. And it has been working in Mass for years now. He is also a known quality, something that would ease the growing fears of the already splintered and scared GOP.
If he implodes too soon, the new candidate has time to ramp up a full national campaign, and Hillary would have her hands full. If he implodes too late, watch for a massive movement towards a third party candidate.
Like that kids' story about the bears' porridge, not too hot, not too cold, his implosion had to be timed just right.

(10,437 posts)even less of a chance to win and the down ballot landslide for democrats could be spectacular...Piss off the conservative trump zealots and they stay home, giving the GOP and their substitute nominee the big middle finger

(30,481 posts)Nor are we talking about "porridge" they are testing to find the one that is just right. They don't have just right and what you are watching is a party imploding.
I love that our party is uniting as they fall apart. The signs are all good.

(28,017 posts)My point is that the timing of his implosion will have differing results depending on other circumstances, like the proximity of the November vote; the resources and abilities of a potential opponent, and the toxic combination of inertia and fear on the part of the PTB in the RNC, the house, and senate leadership.

(16,327 posts)If they get in a semi-sane, palatable GOPer then they take Clinton out, no doubt about it. She is "winning" right now because Trump is such a disaster.

(1,999 posts)This ludicrous fantasy scenario of Trump being replaced needs to go to Infowars where it belongs.

(2,510 posts)That's hardly a 'ludicrous fantasy'. Someone just had it in their head today, to get rid of him....
A lot of heavily-armed Republicans might like that idea.
I hope the Secret Service is up to the challenge.

(2,262 posts)Something will likely happen to replace him at the convention. Then Trump's pride will force him to run third party and hand Hillary the election. There just seems to be no way the party officials can let a clown loose for the GE.

(34,845 posts)Preibus just said a day or so ago that there is no dissension within the GOP. How clueless can one be and still be thought of as a 'leader'?
Having no one calling the shots means the GOP is ripe for demagoguery. We got lucky this time it was Trump.

(23,636 posts)And various states have laws binding delegates to vote for the candidate chosen by the voters. The delegates or convention could disregard those laws; the state could in turn deny the convention the power to name a Republican candidate for the ballot in November.

(48,181 posts)But I predict a limited recovery from the current crisis, just enough to get the trump truck into Cleveland rolling coal and doing a victory lap before it blows a head gasket.

(12,504 posts)Trump just has to be fairly decent for a couple of months and they're all in love with the "incredible maturity and growth" he shows.
Personally I think it's too late to come up with a new offering. Their best bet is to let Trump finish this run, assume he will lose (thereby avoiding any and all bad PR he could ever create as POTUS) and regroup for a new cycle in 4 years.
DCBob
(24,689 posts)However, what a mess that would be. I think we win no matter what.

(28,017 posts)(given how people keep erroneously referring to him as a brain), I think not.
He has the potential to sit in the 2nd most powerful chair in the country for a decade to come. His re-elections would be a snap, (given how conservative some WI voters are) and he would never be at a loss for funding. He controls the puppet strings on most part of government, except for those pesky tea partiers, and he is growing to like it.
Why would he jeopardize his throne to possibly lose to hillary, and in the process, lose the house?
Naw, he is staying put.

(7,638 posts)mittens, mcstain, and the 16 dwarfs are looked at as current losers in the rep party. If they switch it has to be someone with some kind of name recognition that they can control. ryan even plays that "aww shucks, i don't want to do it" perfectly and he is on record as calling tRump a racist and being a team player at the same time. He ha a pretty good chance at it. But you're right, do they want to sacrifice the house leadership role? I don't know, I think they feel it's a lost cause anyway. If they choose anyone but tRump my bets on ryan.
L. Coyote
(51,129 posts)And the big concern is that he could win because he hasn't faced all the negatives of running in primaries.
Finding someone to lead in the next House won't be a problem. Ryan running instead of Trump could save their majority even as he gets trounced.
ChairmanAgnostic
(28,017 posts)OK, another analogy - When you properly heat treat steel, you can accomplish several things. The best result is when you heat a piece to red hot, and slowly anneal it, allowing the iron atoms to reconnect in particular ways. This gives the resulting steel both strength and flexibility. It can also hold a sharpened edge much better. A candidate who has been properly roasted, heated, cooled, and survives being raked over the coals, will be a stronger, more flexible candidate. (assuming he/she didn't burn up in the line of fire).
Ryan has the advantage of being involved in a national campaign. But, I still think the advantages of remaining in the house throne far outway the ego boost that a presidential campaign would offer.

(25,517 posts)us with down-ticket races, including the House and Senate. The longer it looks like the GOP is a complete train wreck, the better it is for us in November.
This is particularly true if they're stuck with Trump. Personally, I think they are. Even if they're not, switching candidates would cause some serious chaos on the GOP side, and Trump's supporters will bail.

(42,847 posts)it won't be Romney.
The only way Trump exits the race is voluntarily, on his own terms. And I think there is almost no chance of that happening. And if it did happen, it couldn't be Romney that takes his place -- that would look like Trump was defeated by Romney, the guy Trump repeatedly characterizes as a Loser. Trump's supporters would burn down the convention hall.

(18,648 posts)Because there will be a bounce back effect from all the people who are leaving because of Trump.
Many would vote for him out of relief that he's not Trump and of course because he's not Hillary either.
It would be a relief if they somehow drafted him. I'm not a Romney supporter by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm convinced Trump is insane. The idea we might somehow end up with the first POTUS who needs a straitjacket is terrifying.

(116,003 posts)If the GOP changes its rules or comes up with some other scheme to give the nomination to someone else, all hell will break loose at the convention and Trump's orcs and trolls will riot. The new nominee will have to be a sacrificial lamb who doesn't mind the destruction of his future political career; meanwhile Trump will probably sue to stay on the ballot, further tying things up (and he might actually succeed, considering he won most of the primaries). If Trump isn't the official nominee he will run as a third-party candidate in states where he can - he'll form his own party, the Trump Party, since he wants his name on everything - and his orcs and trolls will write him in where he can't.

(12,265 posts)It will be a huge mess for them if they do that. They have built their party around racist nationalist voters with all of the dog whistles over the past 20 years. Now the chickens have come to roost. They have to show up to vote for Romney and I wonder if they will. Of course they will say that the supreme court will come after their guns and put gays in charge if they vote for anyone else or don't show up. That might be enough to get them to vote for Mittens.

(10,721 posts)If Trump is replaced, it'll piss off him and his supporters. Turnout for the Republican nominee will suffer. If Trump is nominated, he'll get crushed.
It would be beyond shocking to see anyone other than Clinton succeed Obama. My guess is she ends up with at least 350 electoral college votes.

(7,638 posts)Even if they were to take the nomination from Trump, whomever they choose would not have time to put together a campaign, raise the money and compete. Many of trump supporters woyld stay home. Hillary has the momentum and the party heavyweights like the president, joe biden and elizabeth warren are out in full force. On top of that, I think its already too late in some states to register as a candidate.
