(146,345 posts)and is endorsing the only primary candidate who has been a Democrat throughout her adult life.
Brown stepped back into the Governorship to save California from itself, and has succeeded beyond most people's expectations. He is a pragmatist as well as a progressive. He also understands US politics very well and knows that Hillary Clinton can defeat the likes of Donald Trump better than Sanders can in 2016.
That's why it is no surprise to me that he has endorsed Hillary Clinton. As a superdelegate and the most prominent member of that state's delegation to the convention, his endorsement matters a great deal with many California voters.

Brown shows that you can be both and get things done NOW. I continue to wonder what he could do at a national level.

(146,345 posts)I was somewhat surprised when he ran for Governor again, but he turned out to be the right choice for California. As for progressives being pragmatists, the fact is that successful progressives always are. They have to be, in a nation that switched back and forth from Democratic to Republican at the highest levels so frequently.
People who hold strong progressive ideals are always in the minority in this country, sadly. US voters are skeptical about progressive movements and are prone to electing Republicans when true progressives are on the top of the ballot.
While that's not an ideal situation, it is the situation that prevails in this country. As a philosophical socialist, that's a difficult lesson I've had to learn, over and over again. Despite words to the contrary, I've seen no shift in the electorate toward real progressivism to any degree that would allow for a truly progressive President.
Americans vote for pragmatists. That's the nature of this nation. Voters want immediate problems solved immediately.

On Tuesday, June 7, I have decided to cast my vote for Hillary Clinton because I believe this is the only path forward to win the presidency and stop the dangerous candidacy of Donald Trump.
I have closely watched the primaries and am deeply impressed with how well Bernie Sanders has done. He has driven home the message that the top one percent has unfairly captured way too much of Americas wealth, leaving the majority of people far behind. In 1992, I attempted a similar campaign.
For her part, Hillary Clinton has convincingly made the case that she knows how to get things done and has the tenacity and skill to advance the Democratic agenda. Voters have responded by giving her approximately 3 million more votes and hundreds more delegates than Sanders. If Clinton were to win only 10 percent of the remaining delegates wildly improbable she would still exceed the number needed for the nomination. In other words, Clintons lead is insurmountable and Democrats have shown by millions of votes that they want her as their nominee.
But there is more at stake than mere numbers. The Republican nominee, Donald Trump, has called climate change a hoax and said he will tear up the Paris Climate Agreement. He has promised to deport millions of immigrants and ominously suggested that other countries may need the nuclear bomb. He has also pledged to pack the Supreme Court with only those who please the extreme right.
The stakes couldnt be higher. Our country faces an existential threat from climate change and the spread of nuclear weapons. A new cold war is on the horizon. This is no time for Democrats to keep fighting each other. The general election has already begun. Hillary Clinton, with her long experience, especially as Secretary of State, has a firm grasp of the issues and will be prepared to lead our country on day one.
Next January, I want to be sure that it is Hillary Clinton who takes the oath of office, not Donald Trump.
With respect,
Jerry Brown

Sorry, Sanders fans. Jerry Brown is a progressive who gets things done. California Democrats have enormous respect for him.

I wonder, is he now in the running for the VP slot? I think that he's term limited as Governor out there.
