Sanders: I'm Heading to the Convention Even If Clinton Sweeps CA, NJ PrimariesMARYALICE PARKS May 30, 2016, 10:32 PM ET
Bernie Sanders reaffirmed Sunday that he is not planning to accept defeat in the primary race until the Democratic Partys convention in July, regardless of the outcome of the June 7 primaries, which include delegate-rich California and New Jersey.
Talking to reporters before an event in East Oakland, California, Sanders preemptively rejected any declarations about Hillary Clinton as the presumptive nominee until superdelegates vote in Philadelphia at the party's convention later this summer, even if she passes the threshold for delegates needed, as she likely will, next week.

SFnomad
(3,473 posts)trying to claim anything else is ridiculous.
I used the generally accepted numbers because the post I was replying to was talking about how Secretary Clinton isn't "inspiring the masses" ... replying with how many pledged delegates she is ahead would be comparing apples to oranges. Sure, I could say "more", but that isn't quantifiable.
Secretary Clinton has inspired millions more people to vote than BS has ... it couldn't be much clearer.

(9,527 posts)Clinton's lead is far larger than Obama's lead was in 2008, but nobody doubted Obama's win. Sanders has no viable path to the nomination. He's just posturing, much as Clinton did in 2008.

This has gone on long enough. Once the voting is done I have no interest in pretending everyone doesn't already know the outcome.
My opinion is that Donald Trump represents an unprecedented threat to this country, and I have no interest in providing a platform for people to act like a Trump presidency isn't such a big deal. I have permitted it during primary season because many people seem determined to pretend we live in a fantasyland where Republicans don't exist -- but once the primary is over reality sets in and we can no longer afford to ignore our Republican opponent."

(68,772 posts)This could lead to President Trump...which would destroy all progressive progress for a generation and destroy what we have attained since Roosevelt. July is way to close to November for Bernie to still be hanging around making trouble...he either gets out or is kicked out...his choice. I would rather he conceded and endorsed...built his movement up to something meaningful...and not just an election stunt. I think he could do this...but not if he screws American voters by inflicting Trump upon an undeserving country. People literally will die as a result. And nothing you can say would make me believe Bernie gives a damn about this country, the American people or even his supporters...if he continues to risk the general for what are increasingly self-centered reasons with a strong dose of spite and anger tossed in for berniefun.

(68,772 posts)who I believe would lose the general? The swiftboating of Sanders by Republicans would be huuuuuuuuuge and destroy any chance he had...we would have a loss comparable to McGovern's loss. The tax thing alone would hurt him badly...he wants to raise payroll taxes...who does that affect? The middle class is the answer...also Bernie is weak on issues that matter to me as a woman and I have three daughters...one of whom is Gay. I have no doubt should the GOP get five court picks with President Trump...homosexuality would be outlawed as well as gay marriage...Sanders is not worth the risk.

(68,772 posts)I would remind you that Obama lost nine of the last primaries...including California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. And she was must close to Obama in terms of delegates than Bernie is to her. She also won the popular vote. Sore Loser Bernie Sander...refuses to acknowledge he has lost...keeps coming up with nuttier and nuttier schemes and math. The supers who he has spent an entire year persecuting, some of whom are elected and don't appreciate him funding primary opponents for sitting Dems are not going to go for the loser of the primary by every means for a couple of useless polls...Bernie needs to get off our lawn. And for the last time...a simple majority is all she needs of delegates...which she will have after Jersey even before California ...same as Obama. Then the supers commit and Bernie is toast...she is the nominee. She needs the number you guys are always quoting in terms of pledged and supers...so no she will win and Bernie will go home one way or the other...as a disgraced sore loser or as a person who bowed out gracefully and still has a career and possibly a movement.

(68,772 posts)We are not Republicans. On June 7th after Jersey...she will be the presumptive nominee and the delegates will commit to her as the person with a majority of pledged votes. The convention is about celebrating and taking that one vote ...where Hillary Clinton officially becomes the nominee...and if Bernie has a brain...he will do it by acclamation and concede and endorse somewhere between the 7th and the 14th of June.

Since supers were established, they have ALWAYS voted for the candidate with the most of both.
If you keep fighting, you will be damaging your most important achievement - the movement. Building it into a force that actually gets results - election victories - should be your focus and passion from June 8 onward.

If he continues to denigrate the DNC and other Democrats, they will not give him any power at all during the convention, and likely will do all in their power to ruin his reputation and legacy. (27,995 posts)Weve known for some time that Hillary Clinton will almost certainly be the Democratic nominee. But when will she clinch the nomination? If you look at the few remaining contests on the Democratic primary calendar, the major news outlets barring something devastating happening to the Clinton campaign in the next few weeks are likely to declare Clinton the nominee on June 7. More specifically, New Jersey will likely push Clinton across the finish line, and she may clinch the nomination even before the polls close in California.
If major news outlets declare Clinton the nominee on June 7, they will be counting superdelegates, as they did in 2008 when they declared Barack Obama the presumptive Democratic nominee on June 3.

(3,111 posts)It never says America was every perfect. But it does lay out a vision for it achieving what it, at heart, stands for.
Same with Bernie. He is not "promising" the things he talks about. He talks about what should be. And, as he says, if we simply stand together there is nothing we cannot achieve.
Then there's the "safe" Hillary and Establishment choice. An establishment that has forgotten the principles established by FDR and carried on with afterwards. That believes apparently in the totally mistaken Chicago School of Economics (unless of course your a richie). They believe in triangulation and accommodation to Republican virtues on a whole lot of issues. You could say that they are in fact the new Republican Party, whereas Donald Trump is something different altogether. And the "safe" choice is under investigation by the FBI, one that looks more serious all the time, and feels serious, at least to an oldtime Liberal like me.
I'll leave you with this, a chart of representation in Congress for the last 100 plus years. Do you notice the Democratic majorities during FDR and for decades afterwards, with very little deviation.
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0774721.html
When did we lose and continue to lose such majorities. The second term of Bill Clinton, when he was drifting rightwards and screwing with the Democratic brand. Same with Barack Obama's second term.
When people want, and can be proven by polls, Progressivism and Populism, in general, and then you give them establishment politics, with favors tot he 1% and collusion and so forth you have extinguished the Democratic brand. It's a recipe for disaster, particularly in this election year.
