2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTed Rall: Why I am #NeverHillary
Many progressives are baffled by this stance. Trump is a threat to democracy, decency, peace and the economy. He acts and talks like a nut. Why not suck it up and vote for Hillary? Shes experienced, steady and presentable. Unlike Trump, she understands the issues. Plus: first woman president! Thats 225 years overdue!
...
The fact that she wears bright-colored Doctor Evil suits and has a silly laugh and twinkly eyes and is kinda smart cant change the fact she has never voted against a war, or apologized for voting for one, or promised not to start any new ones. Her resume cant cover up for her record: zero sponsorships or votes for a major anti-poverty proposal, and only one vote against a job-killing free trade agreement.
I dont vote for monsters.

Are you prepared to say that all previous nominees from either party have been illegitimate?

(1,182 posts)I also made no claim that this delegitimizes the eventual nominee. I merely pointed out that a primary victory isn't equivalent to being the most popular.
If you want to go argue that other crap, feel free, but it has nothing to do with what I wrote.

d_legendary1
(2,586 posts)do HRC supporters not understand? Nevada fucking its delegates over has nothing to do with the most votes. States shutting down/changing polling sites has nothing to do with the most votes. A DNC chair who from the very beginning of the primaries has been attacking one campaign has nothing to do with the most votes. Had this primary been free of all this nonsense and the results were the same then I would concede that the people want Hillary as President.
But as it stands the establishment can pick and choose who we have leading our country. If it happened to us you can be sure that this will happen to you too.

They support the candidate who fought to end "Welfare as we know it" and dismantle the social safety net. Of course Hillary supporters won't even need welfare.
They support the candidate who will continue the disastrous "free" trade deals that have decimated the middle and working classes. But, Hillary supporters are doing fine, so it won't bother them.
They support the candidate who is a groupie for the big banks and Wall Street. That's all well and good for the well heeled Hillary fans.

I hope people never ever have to learn that the privilege they think they have might not be enough to protect them:
First they came for the undocumented workers and their families, and I did not speak out
Because I was not an undocumented worker.
Then they came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Muslim.
Then they came for the civil protesters, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a civil protester.
Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak for me.

(63,645 posts)For me, thats enough. What she did was monstrous. She should be in prison for life.
But for some reason Rall was willing to cast a general election vote for John Kerry, who also voted for the Iraq War:
A significant vote for Kucinich will be interpreted by DNC honchos as a desire for a more liberal candidate in the fall, which might shove Kerry (pro-Iraq war, pro-NAFTA, pro-WTO, probably wont get rid of Bushs tax cuts) a little to the left.
With Kerrys nomination a foregone conclusion, lets do what we can to convince him to work harder to appeal to the Democratic wing of the Democratic party. Then, after we lose, lets work enthusiastically for Kerry to replace Bush. Then, if we win, well replace Kerry in 2008 with a real liberal.
This of course begs the question: Why is the Iraq War vote by itself enough to disqualify Hillary Clinton, but not to disqualify John Kerry?
sufrommich
(22,871 posts)If you're not, allow me: there's a double standard at work here,Rall's sexist language should be the first clue.

(5,614 posts)It was still possible to believe Kerry COULD be pushed/shoved/nudged in a progressive direction.
We've evolved beyond that naivete.
If a candidate walks like a war-hawk, talks like a war-hawk and hangs out with Henry Kissinger then the likelihood of voting for a war-hawk is obvious, as is the likelihood of voting for future wars with your ballot.

(4,775 posts)and if you've seen Hillary's speech to congress on her vote, there was no nuance about it, she strongly supported it, not just for her own vote, but advocating that others vote the same way.
For many on the left, myself included, Kerry's having been on both sides of the IWR WAS a problem for us. But even to me, Kerry has consistently been a less hawkish voice than Hillary.
Ted Rall is one of the best out there. His wording in the OP is harsh, but heart-felt and IMHO on target.
Martin Eden
(12,881 posts)There is no excuse for it. Zero. Zilch. The case for war was clearly bogus and the consequences have been horrific.
In the general election the Republican is almost certainly worse when it comes to militarism, corporatism, and a host of other issues. I refused to support John Kerry in the 2004 primary but I travelled to Ohio to GOTV for him because GW Bush is a war criminal who belongs in prison not the White House.
But I am bloody sick of voting for the lesser evil.
We're being played for chumps. Enough is enough.
Why should we have to settle for the lesser evil?
I cannot in good conscience vote for Hillary Clinton, for reasons in addition to her Iraq war vote.
I cannot in good conscience fail to do what little I can to keep a narcissistic fascist demagogue out of the White House.
Come November, if Hillary is the Dem nominee and my home state of Illinois has any chance of flipping to Trump I'll probably flip the D switch for POTUS, then get blind stinking drunk. I'll hate myself in the morning.
But I can understand why so many have finally said enough is enough and will refuse to be a chump.
