Negative ads - how effective are they?

We all know how much money repubs threw at negative ads against Trump in the primaries. They didn't seem to work.
I don't know how much Hillary has spent on the Trump-is-a-misogynist ads, but they clearly aren't helping her as we watch he margin slip away.
This morning, I hear from Clinton that people should beware of supporting Sanders because no negative ads have been slung at him yet.

Is this a valid argument anymore?

Hillary has a 'consider the source' problem. In general negative ads work, however 4139 May 2016 #1

Because the majority of voters doubt her honesty and truthfulness, negative trump ads coming from her may be taken with a grain of salt
