2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI will vote for Clinton if Sanders endorses her.
If Clinton's platform and ideologies meet Sanders' criteria for endorsement, I - and I imagine many other Sanders supporters - will vote for her. Sanders brings ideas and motivations that reflect the needs of those the economy have left behind. These ideas are important and revolutionary in light of the economic direction the country has veered towards these past 40 years.
Thank you Bernie for being a galvanizing leader for a disparate and thus powerless group. By unifying us with your words, energy, and presence, you have altered the DNC narratives and you have earned compromises from Clinton on her platform in order to bring your voters on-board.

p.s. I think for myself & don't take marching orders from anyone - even Bernie. Who WILL be our next president, by the way.

(5,818 posts)I suppose a better phrase would have been "the only way I will vote for Clinton is if Sanders endorses her."

(1,128 posts)IfBernie does not offer an overly enthusiastic endorsement, he will be finished as a politician. Hillary knew this in 2008 and Bernie knows this now

(10,650 posts)he'll just do the politically expedient thing like Hillary always does?
He can continue to be the Senator from Vermont for probably as long as he chooses.

(5,818 posts)Clinton, stunned though she seems to be, has an opportunity here to participate in what I would term, "genuine historical change." She doesn't just have to be wealthy and powerful; she can be a transformative force for good.

And probably every presidential general election for the rest of my life.

(35,619 posts)She made bland comments which were hyped for clicks:
Laura Bush has some very specific ideas about what the countrys next president should prioritize. I want our next presidentwhoever he or she might beto be somebody who is interested in women in Afghanistan, said the former first lady at the New York Times annual Women in the World summit last week. She also said that her ideal candidate would continue U.S. policies and continue to do what we're committed to do as a country.

If Bernie endorses her, I'll understand even an outsider independent can't burn too many bridges with the party he caucuses with. But I won't pay the slightest attention to him on that point...

(5,818 posts)leverage Bernie is bringing may make this situation different, I am aware that - without a splinter group like the Tea Party - any leverage can be buried. I am desperately seeking a liberal president.

(146,345 posts)Bernie is not really as extreme as some of his supporters seem to be. He's a career politician, himself, and knows what Republicans plan if they gain control of all three branches of federal government. He's said as much already.
On June 8, when he accepts that there is no path to his nomination, he'll pivot to support Hillary's candidacy. I don't think there's any question about that. Whether he actively campaigns for her is another matter, and I doubt he will do that. Following Hillary's lead in 2008, he'll probably call for her nomination by acclamation at the convention, and that will happen.
What he does after that is really up to him. I hope he continues in the Senate and seeks another term in two years. He may do that, or he may opt to retire. I don't know, because I do not know him.
I do know, however, that he will not countenance Donald Trump becoming President. He will fight that.
