Justice’s Reputation Hangs In Balance Of Clinton Probe

No matter what decision federal prosecutors and FBI investigators make in the Hillary Clinton email probe, there is sure to be a public backlash from the left or the right.

If Clinton doesn’t face charges, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and the Justice Department will certainly come under criticism from conservatives who will suspect President Obama’s administration of covering up for a former Cabinet member.

Yet if charges are brought, Democrats are just as sure to question the motives of FBI Director James Comey, a Republican who worked for the Bush administration.

The stakes are huge given Clinton’s status as the likely Democratic presidential nominee, underscoring the pressure on the Justice Department. Charges against her or her aides could wound her presidential bid, while silence would ease her path to the White House.

“In this scenario, federal prosecutors are damned if they do bring a case and damned if they don’t,” said Justin Shur, the former deputy chief of the Justice Department’s public integrity section, who is now at the law firm MoloLamken.

2. Whatever the FBI recommends is going to have the most weight.

If they don't recommend indicting Hillary, the FBI will need to explain why. Except for by the extreme right, their result will be respected.

If the FBI recommends indictment, the Justice Department will be destroyed if they fail to indict. The Democrats are the big losers if the FBI recommends indictment, whether an indictment happens or not.

By sticking to the evidence, the FBI really has nothing to lose whatever their decision.

out that she was under investigation. When I voted they were just talking about e-mails not classified items left on the server.

I cannot help but wish we did not have a candidate who is this vulnerable. When I have a primary I want my candidates reasonably sure that they will not be going to jail before the election is over. Or even worse during the GE or from the WH.

I would like to be certain that there are no legal problems.

...of covering up for a former cabinet member".

There will be an attempt at whitewashing, I'm as certain of that as the sun coming up tomorrow morning. It will probably be so heavy handed and embarrasingly obvious that it will have the opposite effect and piss off more voters than it satisfies.

And later on when the truth comes out and the full Clinton stench is revealed, the whole episode will turn around and bite the president in the ass.

she just wanted money and the rules, well, the rules just don't apply.

Her little extortion/shakedown scam couldn't exist under the scrutiny of close government oversight. So she worked around the system. She got caught, and has yet to provide an honest answer. We don't need 4 years of criminal investigations by the House.
