2016 Postmortem

Something about this campaign makes absolutely no sense. Bernie has openly talked about being the most progressive candidate, questioning the progressive credentials of Hillary. It is no secret to anyone paying attention that he is (to an undetermined degree) the more liberal of the candidates. And yet, as evidenced by the exit polling out of West Virginia tonight, he continues to win in rural, red-state areas where the Democrats are perceived to be more conservative than the average.
What would make so-called 'conservative Democrats' vote for the more liberal candidate? Are those the kinds of voters more prone to being uncomfortable with a woman being in charge?

(112 posts)The economy sucks and can only get worse as jobs are offshored. It doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you are in. If you are part of the working-class you will want a politician that will discourage shipping your job overseas. Hillary supports offshoring policies so it is either Trump or Bernie. They are the only two credible candidates that have pledged to protect American jobs.
Edit: Green party and libertarian party candidates also pledge to protect American jobs. The next few months is gonna be interesting.

(2,096 posts)I know it's hard for a Hillary supporter to understand but a lot of people, regardless of whether they consider themselves liberal, conservative or moderate in their views, support HONEST and ETHICAL candidates. But go ahead and claim sexism we're used to it.

(38,613 posts)Surely that's one reason.
They may not always agree with Sanders, but they know he's telling them what he actually believes, and can see through Clinton's pandering. That's another reason.
And if I'm not mistaken, Clinton won more former Confederate states than Sanders did.

(5,818 posts)He's anti-Clinton, echoing decades of "vast right-wing conspiracy" lies about HRC. Bernie says many of the same things as Trump, and offers an opportunity to vote against HRC NOW, without waiting until November. Bernie needs to stop helping The Donald and get back to work as a VT Senator, IMO.
