2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMedia Silent as Bernie Sanders Packs California Stadium Beyond Capacity
Despite the mainstream medias repeated assertions that the Bernie Sanders movement is now a thing of the past, enthusiasm from his base only seems to be growing, based on the overwhelming number of people who flocked to his rally in Sacramento this Monday night.
Supporters lined up for over four hours to see Senator Sanders outside Bonney Field some of them even longer. The following video by Our Voice Media shows the massive scope of the line, as the videographers take several minutes to drive from one end of the line to the other.

(47,803 posts)Whether or not Sanders actually wins the nomination, the continuing strength of his support despite all odds-- and the REASONS for that -- is a news story with major implications.
Not as "reality show interesting" as how awful Trump is to women or his peeing contest with Ryan, but just as important to the larger political picture and future of the nation.

Ironic moment - some reporter asked Trump why he is talking about Bill Clinton's affairs rather than actual issues.
Maybe the press should press Trump on issues instead of asking inane questions like the above.
A CNN reporter asked Trump a question and Trump got mad and said he should congratulate him first for winning and basically bullied the reporter into doing so (and apologizing).
It is insane.

(45,319 posts)for all candidates, not just Bernie and Hillary but all the other Democrats as well. CA is our largest State and they are gearing up for their Primary next month. This means that in these and other States, hundreds of Democratic volunteers are working hard to get high turnout and build excitement for November victories.
I understand this confuses the jaded, apathetic East Coast where they are proud of NY's 29% turnout but here we expect more than twice that result, even in midterms. We put effort into this. This confounds the East where they don't really care if there is turn out or turn off or turn downs. They just don't care. We do.
So who cares? Democrats care, actively. Those who throw shade and seek to lower the interest in ongoing Democratic elections serve themselves and not the Democratic Party.

Hillary's campaign which you say you support, is busily trying to get volunteers to do the work, as is Bernie's and the campaigns of other Democrats. I support their efforts. You should too.

2. Big crowds are visually impressive, but don't correlate with winning. Bernie had record setting crowds in New York.... and lost by a wide margin.
But even given all that, I heard about Bernie's rally not once, not twice, but three times on various news outlets this morning.

And as a resident of the area (I've even worked the polling place closest to that venue) I can assure you that youth turnout is real and enthused.

(24,010 posts)...he talked about the impacts of climate change on California! It's not only the drought. The ocean is sick and everybody here knows it.
Sanders is the only major political figure who talks about our MORAL responsibility to leave a healthy and habitable planet for future generations. And he is the only presidential candidate who will actually try to do that.
This was one of the most enthusiastic crowds I've heard--and they've all been pretty raucous. I heard the first half of his speech live on KFBK radio-Sacramento, on my commute home. So thrilling to have Sanders here in my home state, and to, at long last, be able to cast a meaningful vote in the primary. California can put Sanders over the top!
I notice that the Clinton supporters are worried enough to throw snide our way. Interesting, huh?

(15,445 posts)If we're looking at overall delegates pledged and super Sanders stands at 1,400 and Clinton at 2,202. That means the Vermont senator needs 983 more delegates to reach the magic number and Clinton needs just 181.
Using a combination of delegates, because it's likely that both candidates will need to do so, Clinton must win about 19 percent of the remaining delegates and Sanders must win about 81 percent of them to reach 2,383, according to an analysis from NBC News.

Reporters are talking about Bill's affairs because Trump brought it up.
No news outlet has covered the actual substance of the positions on issues of either of the Democratic candidates, for instance.
Trump is driving all the coverage - and he doesn't even need to appear on the shows, just phone it in (literally).

(11,546 posts)That we are going near the end. That way more people have had a chance to hear Bernie and can make their decisions based on information rather than just name recognition. Now with the MSM saying "it's over", that definitely doesn't help, but still people can make that decision for themselves - just as WV did today.
anotherproletariat
(1,446 posts)To be generous, why don't we say that 100,000 unique people have attended a Sanders rally each week for the past year. That would mean that a total of 5.2 million people have been to a rally. (Let's not even get into the fact that some of the people attending are not supporters, or are just curious...for example I went to a rally in NY last month, just to see what kind of people were there.)
Given the U.S. population of 320 million, a simple calculation tells us that only 1.6% of Americans have been to a Sanders rally. Again, this is extremely generous. Bottom line is that a candidate needs far more than just rallies to get enough votes to win. Different demographics have different abilities or desires to attend rallies. My parents and most of their friends would rather donate money than change their schedules to attend a rally or volunteer their time. But, they are all very loyal voters.
Trying to appeal to young people, who are most likely to come out and wait in line for hours to see a candidate, is a very old and common device of a fringe candidate to develop the optics which make them seem viable. This is why such candidates inevitably develop campaign promises designed to appeal to young people. I will admit that this tactic did work well for Sanders for a while, but obviously won't win him the race.

Regardless of the primary vote to date, Sanders is ever more apparent the better and more popular Democratic candidate.
Too bad Hillary Clinton had such a head start and was treated as an incumbent by the failed DNC.
The popular vote would be closer had Sanders had the monies and campaign staff to compete in the early Southern states; Sanders may still well lose but the votes would have been closer.
I hope the super-delegates are watching and taking a serious think of the situation regards the Democratic party and the general election.
Hillary Clinton will result in less voter turnout and thus less down ticket suggest and likely only entrenched Democratic incumbents will survive.
Sanders will bring out more voters, more new and young voters, and more down ticket success for incumbents and other Democratic pols and issues.
Do your jobs media and super-delegates.
I truly believe that if Bernie had the same amount of recognition that Hillary had OR that the primaries were started over today, Bernie would be ahead.
