(32,617 posts)Some candidates just talk smack and others actually work to improve the lives of others by advancing good policy. The problem with policy is you actually need to be smart, curious, and willing to spend time, a lot of time, to figure out how to move it forward.
kaleckim
(651 posts)on how to get things done? When she was in office, what exactly did she get done? What she got done at the State Department was pretty much a train wreck, and many of the things that her husband got done with Republicans were right wing and decimated poor and working people.
Also explain, even if there was evidence that the two parties' policies have actually done anything other than make everything worse off in the last few decades (in other words, assume that being "bi-partisan" wasn't an end in and of itself but was a means towards policies that benefited working people and the country), the logic as to why they would work with Clinton of all people. Please, you or one of her followers explain the logic. The Republicans will work with her at all, and they'd work with her more than they would Sanders, because...anyone? Be honest, if they did, it'd be because she did what her husband largely did, sell the store to corporate interests and the rich. I'd also like to know how voting for her makes sense if someone is a "centrist" (center of what exactly?). If they want policies that are in the center of popular opinion (which is well to the left of government policy on a wide range of issues), and if every negotiation results in a compromise somewhere in the middle of the two negotiating parties, where would the middle position between the "centrist" Clinton and the far right wing Republicans? Even assuming they are equally as powerful and equally good at negotiating, you have center-right policies, which are deeply, increasingly, unpopular and would make a bad situation worse.
What a weak candidate she is, horrible. If she runs against someone other than Trump, the most unpopular major candidate in polling history, not trusted, center-right record on economic interests, hawkish, and polls much worse versus Trump and the other Republicans than Sanders (and has for months now).

And what are you angry about? Baobab
(4,667 posts)Isn't eliminating them (and also eliminating or delaying generics, which are off patent !) one of the main goals of TPP?
Its been that way from the start. The US has been trying to make drugs more expensive with no compassion or common sense. We are trying to force other countries to dump public healh systems and privatize health care because public health care systems drive a hard bargain for drugs. They get much loser prices, paying world average prices and the drug companies hate to have to bargain with countries like France that get their populage the latest drugs for a quarter or less of what US purchasers pay.
For the biggest example of our madness - why else [link: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.405.5725|would we do this?]
stopbush
(24,398 posts)It cuts into their profit margins. It's in their interest to negotiate them as low as possible. If a drug is too expensive, they won't cover it in their formularies. If enough companies won't cover a drug, the pharma company won't make any $.
Right now, private insurers in the USA get even lower prices than the VHA on drugs. The only program suffering is Medicare/caid, which on average pays about 80% of a drug's list price. That would be lower if the feds were allowed to negotiate prices.
Americans are under the impression that no one is allowed to negotiate drug prices in this country, when in fact the only current restriction is on the government not being able to negotiate for Medicare-caid.
Baobab
(4,667 posts)they violate trade agreements that we force countries to sign by means of arguably quite indefensible means.
We're also fighting public education, and by extension, science.
As to why they do it, I don't know. High costs are not good business. They would sell more drugs if they were more affordable and fewer people would die. The prices of drugs and the amounts that are spent on research are infiniesimally small compared to what they would have us believe.
That is what their own people tell me in private. Nobody is a bigger critic of them than their own people.
Baobab

Single payer is the eventual goal. Sadly, Sanders' numbers are woefully inadequate when it comes to paying for his Medicare for all. Laughable, really. That's where he lost me, when he put out Reaganesque pie-in-the-sky ways of paying for it all. When he's challenged on his numbers his response is that he disagrees with the numbers the economists provide. What a joke.

And criticizing HRC's praise of Nancy Reagan is empty political rhetoric?
Sanders basically said he had no idea what she was saying. Is calling out a lie just rhetoric?
I remember the days of the "gay plague" clearly. No one awake and aware in those days could possibly imagine the Reagan's helping the sick and dying. Fortunately for Hillary some seem able to "evolve" past that, just like those coal miners were great-full for her apology.

By the time, the truth is revealed--the lies has been spread around like gasoline. OH, and don't bother trying to post the truth (after the lie has been debunked) you will be called out for "OMG! Why are you bringing that up? We've moved on! LOL!". And the Clinton schemers will be well on their way to spreading new gossip.

Are we sick of the Clinton camp and the Brock brats spreading lies and gossip yet?
From David Brock's proclamation, even before the Iowa caucuses, that, "Black lives don't matter to Bernie Sanders"--to the outrageous lies about Bernie's Pope visit--they never stop. How about "Bernie is sexist!" That was one of my favorites.

I am sure if he had continued to go through channels Sanders would meet with them.....He really does care about AIDS, ya know. It's not like intentionally blowing the issue of AIDS off.
It is similar to the time in the NY primary when a city council member suggested both candidates tour public housing. Clinton happened to show up first. Suddenly "See? Bernie doesn't care about Black people in public housing!" cry the phony outrage patrol.
Lo and behold.... Bernie also accepts the invitation a couple of days later, when schedule permitted.
And bigger Lo and behold, the councillor who issued the invitation wound up endorsing Sanders. Said Sanders "gets it" more than Clinton.

(5,636 posts)Bernie is a gay rights fraud. He never risked political capital on gay rights. He voted against DOMA, but said nothing about it. He supported gay marriage before Hillary, but not until the Vermont legislature legalized it. Not only that, he was from a really liberal state where he could have been much bolder. Bernie is not and has never been part of the gay rights struggle, other than a liberal from a liberal state where he could vote the right way.
Meanwhile, the Clintons faced down the religious and far right, and barred discrimination against people with AIDS or who were gay by federal contractors, granted persecuted gays asylum, fought to prevent Congress from outlawing gay adoption, appointed scores of gays to government positions, Bill talked about gay rights in a State of the Union address, Hillary was the first First Lady to go on a gay pride parade. They got into a lot of trouble, and Bill's efforts to allow gays in the military met a huge backlash that forced him to accept DADT. DOMA, meanwhile, was voted on 6 weeks before the national elections, so the only people who voted against it were liberals from safe districts, like Bernie.
Bernie is all about economic justice. There's a reason that leading organizations and individuals active in gay rights, women's rights, and civil rights have not endorsed him. He's NEVER risked political capital to fight for gay, womens, or civil rights. Given the state he was from, he should have been on the leading edge, but he was not.
