Dem convention host: Sanders supporters better 'behave themselves' when he losesBy Harper Neidig May 08, 2016, 07:00 am
I think its gonna be a great convention, but of course the key to it is the Sanders people. Bernies gonna have his name placed in nomination; were gonna have a roll call; theres gonna be a demonstration in support of Bernie; hes gonna lose the roll call, he said. His supporters have to behave and not cause trouble. And I think they will, and I think Sen. Sanders will send them a strong message.

(3,473 posts)By the time both parties get to the convention floor, there usually is a presumptive nominee. They still go through the motions anyway to fire up the base of the party.

That way, Hillary fans can see exactly what there base is: a half-empty room of unenthusiastic supporters who'll sit on their asses and hope she wins on name recognition alone (like they apparently did in the primaries since I've yet to see any evidence of enthusiastic support for her).
Good luck with that.

(13,889 posts)I understand you'd like for something amazing to happen but the far likely reality is that Clinton arrives at the convention with a majority of pledged delegates and the support of enough superdelegates that she will win on the first ballot. Because there are only two candidates and the winning condition is a simple majority (AFAIK) there will not be anything Sanders' supporters can do about this besides sigh over it.
The convention isn't like the Superbowl where the final game is fought out in front of an audience of millions, it's more like the bit where they hand out the trophy afterwards. There will be only one ballot, because there are only two candidates and so logically one of them will win a majority of the votes. It could just possibly be Sanders that wins that ballot, but that looks pretty unlikely. And once that ballot has taken place, that's the result, there's no second round of voting.
Like I say, Sanders could conceivably win but the probability that he will actually do so is vanishingly low (barring unforeseen circumstances) and everyone with a clue can see that for themselves.

(2,096 posts)He has a problem with democracy unless he can script it. He's in a tizzy because he knows this convention will be unscripted and the more he tries to force people into doing what he and the rest of the establishment want the more they will reject it. He is playing with fire here so he really should watch what he says.
anigbrowl
(13,889 posts)I mean they hold a vote, and on current form Hillary looks likely to win that vote. And then that's it, she's the winner. A candidate only needs a simple majority of the delegates to win. That's been the case since 1936 and there hasn't been a convention that went to multiple ballots since 1952.
So if the vote is held and Hillary wins and Bernie loses, what do you mean by 'they will reject it'? What do you think Bernie's supporters should do if they are outvoted? Also, why, given that the rule about a simple majority being the threshold of victory has been in place for 80 years?

(13,889 posts)Sounds like you don't actually have any answer and are just hoping that Something Happens, regardless of the fact that organizations put procedural rules in places precisely to minimize such unpredictability.
I suppose Bernie delegates could walk out of the convention hall in disgust if they lose but that won't alter the outcome of the vote. Once someone has gained a majority of the votes the delegates' job is basically over anyway. So they could do whatever they liked but it wouldn't change the fact of who the winner is.

(30,481 posts)The group that will be in attendance at the convention will not be representative of the extremely aggressive Sanders supporters. Many of these people have been a part of the process for a long time. They are good Democrats and will cheer Sanders endorsement speech and Clintons acceptance speech. Almost every single one.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)Most of Bernie's delegates are fairly new to the process, which is how he's challenging her. People got involved in the process JUST to support him. Don't count on their supporting a neocon war hawk who'll do nothing about Wall Street while putting Social Security on the table.
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)And you can go around telling people they are in a bubble all day long. All good with me. I believe my statement to be very accurate. Almost every one of his delegates will gleefully back Clinton. I know you dream that not to be true.

But no prob, Hilly's courting "megachurch moms". She'll play them JLo's latest crap tune, and they'll fall into formation and Stepford vote her into office. I'm sure it'll work.

(13,889 posts)OK, so they hold the vote, say Hillary wins and a whole lot of Sanders supporters walk out. OK, she's still the nominee. Once the delegates have cast their vote then there isn't anything else for them to do, really.
