MotherJones is now reporting on a FoxNews interview with Guccifer:
Asked if he was curious about the address, Lazar merely smiled. Asked if he used the same security question approach to access the Clinton emails, he said no then described how he allegedly got inside.
For example, when Sidney Blumenthal got an email, I checked the email pattern from Hillary Clinton, from Colin Powell from anyone else to find out the originating IP. When they send a letter, the email header is the originating IP usually, Lazar explained.
He said, then I scanned with an IP scanner." Lazar emphasized that he used readily available web programs to see if the server was alive and which ports were open. Lazar identified programs like netscan, Netmap, Wireshark and Angry IP, though it was not possible to confirm independently which, if any, he used.
In the process of mining data from the Blumenthal account, Lazar said he came across evidence that others were on the Clinton server. "As far as I remember, yes, there were up to 10, like, IPs from other parts of the world, he said.

I hope everyone realizes that this is only the beginning. Trump will make this an issue and it will be in the news non-stop now. Reality TV at it's finest. First the server, then the pay-to-play and the FBI investigation. Accusations will fly that Obama's Justice Department is blocking the indictment, and democrats will be on the defensive. This cannot end well. The republicans will threaten to start impeachment proceedings if she is nominated. The public will be reminded of all the Clinton scandals and become disenchanted.
Whether any of it is true or not is almost irrelevant. It will be relentless.
She needs to get out of the race NOW.

(11,366 posts)The company I work for does security reviews. We do risk analysis reports and vulnerability scans.
The FBI, on the other hand, investigates potential criminal activity. They're not a cyber security assessment company.
And you can bet money that Guccifer was extradited now as a result of the FBI's CRIMINAL investigation. He's been in jail in Romania for more than two years. Romania is a friendly nation when it comes to extradition. If the U.S. government had wanted him sooner, they would have agreed sooner. It's pretty obvious.

(40,656 posts)this is. I will probably be banned for that. Apparently everyone is really touchy about this when they aren't yawning.
Guccifer is a real piece of work. He will rip her up. I read about him before and he's a real sharp operator. Imagine what the world knows and how they will use it against her. Sidney Blumenthal wasn't even supposed to be in her stuff because Obama said for him not to be included. She has no excuse for this and she owes Obama a HUGE apology. Yes, let's make her president. We need more of this kind of judgement.

THAT is what really really really burns. Aside from the exposure of CIA operatives' identities, of course.

(1,217 posts)U.S. indictment[edit]
In June 2014, Guccifer was indicted in absentia by a grand federal jury in the U.S. State of Virginia for his hacking activities in the United States. The indictment claimed Guccifer hacked into the email and social media accounts of high-profile victims, including a family member of two former U.S. presidents, a former U.S. cabinet member, a former member of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and a former presidential advisor. The U.S. Justice Department did not indicate whether it would seek extradition of Guccifer from Romania, where he was jailed in January 2014 for seven years.[13]
https://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/98-958.pdf
Extradition is triggered by a request submitted through diplomatic channels. In this country, it
proceeds through the Departments of Justice and State and may be presented to a federal
magistrate to order a hearing to determine whether the request is in compliance with an applicable
treaty, whether it provides sufficient evidence to satisfy probable cause to believe that the fugitive
committed the identified treaty offense(s), and whether other treaty requirements have been met.
If so, the magistrate certifies the case for extradition at the discretion of the Secretary of State.
Except as provided by treaty, the magistrate does not inquire into the nature of foreign
proceedings likely to follow extradition.
In March 2013, the hacker released to RT and several other news outlets the four memos that had been sent to Clinton from her former political adviser Sidney Blumenthal. The memos contain information regarding the September 11, 2012 attacks on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, as well as the January 2013 hostage crisis in In Amenas, Algeria.
Lehel was indicted by the Department of Justice in 2014 on charges of wire fraud, unauthorized access to a protected computer, cyberstalking, aggravated identity theft and obstruction of justice.

MoJo is just reporting what the dude said, no matter who he said it to.
What's sad is that so few media are actually following up on this important story and leaving it to right-wing news sites to do so. What the hell is going to happen if the Democratic establishment nominates Hillary and she gets indicted or threatened with it? Don't you find that troubling?

(20,582 posts)information - 'keep em coming' - Blumenthal, who'd been kicked out by Obama but who Clinton hired for her Foundation at the same time. These emails were purposefully kept secret from the President, whom she'd pushed on Libya.
Libya is fucking ruined - thousands died, many hung in the streets, raped, murdered, burned alive - by western funded 'rebels'. Most of IS recruits came from Libya - as well as much of the weaponry they got via this lying atrocity.
Clap REAL HARD. None of this matters at all to you, does it?

(50,130 posts)Blumenthal (on the payroll of the Clinton Foundation) was ginning up his own private business interests in Libya and also using as a source a former CIA officer who was ALSO ginning up business interests there.
This is the most cynical, corrupt, un-American episode since Watergate. And it is likely to explode in just the same manner, within months.

I don't think that all the likely alternative reactions were captured by your statement. I wouldn't claim to have given the alternatives much consideration.
But, as a process, once most of the alternatives are on the table for consideration you can contemplate the likelihood of each.
My guess is public reaction is going to be divided among them. That division is very likely to break along existing bias. That's likely to be simple us vs them sort of stuff.
So, we might expect Hillary's many supporters to defend her, we might see some democrats who weren't supporters who see attacks on her as threatening their party/their party's candidate also come to defend her. We might expect some people to finally become disenchanted, and we may certainly expect her opponents use any scandal in the news as evidence that supports their opposition to her.
