(8,311 posts)However, could you consider the civil way of dealing with potential shills, which is to report them to Admin/MIR?
Every new poster deserves the benefit of the doubt, which is why traditionally accusations of shilling have been considered personal attacks, even against newly registered users.
Also, I ask everyone here to keep our wonderful MIR team volunteers in your thoughts, as it's a really unfun job and won't be getting any more pleasant until after November.

(1,729 posts)Accusations of shilling against newly registered users is really a personal attack? Is that in he TOS? My god, I've been called a Brock shill or some other form of paid trill at least twenty times now by different people. It got so annoying that I took my profile public.
moriah
(8,311 posts)Which is why you will often see people say to obvious trolls being obvious from first post, "Welcome to DU!" In obviously sarcastic fashion.
Well they go way beyond that now. I've practically turned my profile into an ad to get away from that label. Lol
moriah
(8,311 posts)We.did have a very different moderation system then, too. There were volunteer moderators, but you never got to hear back from your alert. It wasn't transparent, but in most egregious cases Tombstones would be delivered quickly to the offender.
Skinner created the jury system so people wouldn't feel like the system was non-transparent. And I think it was a good idea originally.
Still, civility should be important.
nolawarlock
(1,729 posts)Keep the jury system but have a way to appeal it to an admin. The admin appeals should keep people from overusing the system to silence opposing views and, yeah, I'm sure people will appeal even their horrible posts at first, but if there is some sort of penalty for appealing something that is truly egregious then that may stop that as well.

moriah
(8,311 posts)That's a pretty mild transparency page showing -- I feel really bad for anyone getting hides for most of those posts.
The jury system was supposed to enforce civility, not agreement with the masses, but it was created not during a primary, and obviously doesn't function well in one. But I did see in Skinner's post when he made the change that at least allowed poor nolawarlock to not get tombstoned and survive the primary, that he's going to try to have changes for next time.
MADem
(135,425 posts)Not everyone's an a-hole, and yeah, that kind of stuff used to be frowned upon here. This place is a lot nicer outside primary season (this is the ugliest I've seen it, though 2008 was no picnic either).
I am also a Massachusettsian and I get to Salem on occasion (though I avoid it on Halloween, for obvious reasons--too crowded!) --what sort of things do your shops sell in Salem? Is it all "serious" stuff or do you indulge the tourists and day trippers as well? You're certainly well situated for the business you're in!
nolawarlock
(1,729 posts)I was a Hillary lurker. Didn't want Obama but now I wish he'd never leave. Still, I think she'll do a great job.
I didn't really want to be public. It's not like I'm all that famous or anything. Being a famous witch is like being a famous janitor ... except I might end up in a few more tabloids. But I didn't want my clearly unusual career to be a factor in how people viewed my opinions especially given how much controversy I've had to deal with. I think I've been falsely accused of more things than Hillary. But if it's a choice between being who I am and constantly being called some Brock-hired Hillary troll, I'd prefer to take the hits as me.
Everything in our shops is serious in the sense that it has purpose, but our shops are in two tourist towns and so we try to make everything very accessible and fun when we can but we never compromise on the core our purpose, which is giving people tools of change. Of course we get many practitioners who travel like other tourists but the vast majority of our shoppers are not practitioners. They're people who want to believe in magic again. Yeah, we get the folks in the French Quarter who just want a voodoo doll to stick pins into in front of their bosses but hey, not much I can say about what they do after they leave.
That is part of the reason I choose to post here. Granted, I'm sure I could sway some votes for the Dems if I rant hard enough on my Facebook but then I'd be alienating the people I'm sworn to help. I get Republicans, Democrats, Berniecrats, and god knows what else. As a business person, I don't want to alienate their business. As a practitioner, I don't want to diminish their need for help by making everything about politics.
And frankly I hate that anyway. I swear I go to CNN and. Read a story about a rare zebra giving birth in a zoo and the comments section will be dominated by right wing trolls talking about liberals. I'm like, "it's a fucking zebra!"
And If I were my customers, I'd want me to shut up and sing. I never felt sorry for the Dixie Chicks. Yeah, I was as embarrassed about Bush as anyone, but their audience was made up of Republican Country Music fans. Know your audience. I learned this back in 1994 at the US Air Arena at Barbra's return to concert touring. Half of Congress was there and she asked the audience how many Dems and how many Repubs were there. God I think 75% of the room were Republican. I snickered to my friend next to me that they were probably the only ones who could afford the ticket. I scraped for that damned thing I'll tell ya but I would have swum an ocean to see her.
So here we are and that's why I'm here. I studied politics at Brandeis in the early 90's. That's a place where you really see a range of views and all of them are strongly held. I have a sort of hobby passion for it that neither my husband or friends share and I actually look forward to calmer waters.
Thank you for the welcome.

(135,425 posts)Next time I go to Salem I'll ask for the name of your place and pop in. I'm just a schmuck, but I have a niece who might like a gift or two!
I hope you stick around here--I think you've got a lot to add to the conversation.
The level of rudeness here is Over The Top nowadays, but it will recede eventually. Also, the place skews older (and I'm one of the geezer brigade, myself) and a bit of energetic, relatively youthful, business owner perspective will class up the joint, I think!
I was in the same boat as you back in 08, supported Clinton, got over it, now I'm an Obama fan for life.
It can happen!
nolawarlock
(1,729 posts)I know they didn't back in the day, which surprised me given how big their politics department was.
I'm not all that young. I turn 47 this year so I'm definitely not a millenial.
The business owner perspective is tough. It's what scares me about Bernie. I share his desire to force corporations to pay their fair share but I also worry that he'd steamroll over small businesses to do it. I'm just hoping however we adjust minimum wages and taxes, they do so in a way that allows those of us who don't have the wiggle room of corporations to adjust. Small business provide us with unique experiences. Heck, there aren't any big corporations that sell what we offer. We need to treasure small business becore they all go the way of the small pharmacy.

(8,311 posts)I was forcibly outed to my ultra-religious family when my mom "dropped her basket", and after a boss found out about it, got appendicitis, and then literally searched my cube for voodoo dolls of her, I kept it pretty quiet at work.
But you might get this.... in my Trad (link is to one of the two books published by its founder) we only go up to a 2nd degree Initiation for our clerical degree. I suspect that's because Stanley's wife was Alexandrian and it was to avoid offense or issues with her participation in his Trad's rituals/initiations, if she ever did.
I had done all the work for my 2nd -- and even, due to circumstances, assisted with the ritual for the 2nd for another person -- but had not felt called yet to actually take on the role of clergy, so had not actually been given the initiation.
Then, when my very first teacher and mentor passed over, several years later, her sons asked me to officiate her memorial. She was far more fond of "Nine Words The Eclectic Rede Attest" than any Trad. I explained it to my boss as "being asked to give the eulogy", and I can tell you it was the hardest thing I had ever done since helping my own father pass over in hospice -- but I accepted the Call.
And ever since, the Universe really hasn't let me be "closeted" anymore. I have tried to explain my beliefs as being very similar to the Religious Society of Friends, because I know for sure if I'd been alive when they were a more popular choice that's what I would have been, but...
I know it's way OT for the discussion, but I thought you might find it interesting.
And welcome to DU!

(11,243 posts)people with 10's of thousands of posts of being Brock shills too. So nothing personal Some have gone straight off the rails, it seems.
The accusations SHOULD be hidden. The old rule was you could not make that accusation unless there was proof and/or the poster had been banned. Good rule, IMO. Accusing someone of being a troll just because you don't like their opinion is weak and disruptive.

(1,729 posts)I ended up putting a bunch of people on ignore over it.

(8,311 posts)One person accused me of being assigned a "shift" for my posting because my opinion was positive about Hillary.
Another, because just because I am a Hillary supporter doesn't mean I'm insane (and admitted her assassination reference in 08 wasn't her finest hour), that I was a disappointed Bernie supporter who needed to go through a grieving process.
Wow.
wildeyed
(11,243 posts)or quite a few of the others who have been accused At least not for the shift work.
That type of accusation is just straight-up disruptive, a way to silence anyone they disagree with because they got nothing else.

(8,311 posts)As I said in another post, if there was actually a way to make money posting my pro-Hillary positions after the primary ends... I'm desperate enough to have seriously considered phone sex work. Yeah, I'd apply.
Until the primary ends, though, it'd be similar to why I won't do Tarot readings for money -- I tried, and got someone calling for help finding a missing loved one, not just someone wanting to talk about their love life.
I'm broker than fuck so my standards are pretty low, but they do exist...

Kids of today have NO IDEA.... Four channels and they didn't even work most of the time! Worse than being the human remote control was being the one who had to stand on top of the chair next to the bookcase and hold the antenna up to get reception I was the oldest, so it was never me! I had minions for that.
Nice to meet you too A good change from the usual around here.

(58,785 posts)Bernie intends as he always said, to remain in the race until the end. But, he says his fight will now focus on ISSUES, and he will stop partisan infighting for a nomination he cannot win.
Thank you, Bernie. His battle to get his ideas across to America will continue and, as long as he avoids giving aid and comfort to the Republicans in the process, any success should benefit us all.

LA Times:
....In a statement, Sanders did not withdraw his candidacy but appeared ready to stop the aggressive attacks that have defined the race over the last several weeks.
He said he would continue accumulating delegates in the 14 remaining contests in an effort to make the party platform more liberal at the Democratic convention in July.
The people in every state in this country should have the right to determine who they want as president and what the agenda of the Democratic Party should be, he said. That's why we are in this race until the last vote is cast. That is why this campaign is going to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia with as many delegates as possible to fight for a progressive party platform.

(13,340 posts)Keep in mind he now needs to win 64% of the remaining pledged delegates just to overtake Clinton's pledged delegate lead.
In other words, he would have to win, on average, by margins about what Hillary won Maryland by last night. How likely do you think that is?
