MLK Associate (Rev. Harold Middlebrook) Tells Memphis Baptist Group He’s Backing Bernie Sanders

MLK associate tells Memphis Baptist group he’s backing Bernie Sanders
By Linda A. Moore - The Commercial Appeal
2/23/16

February 23, 2016 - Long time Civil Rights activist Rev. Harold Middlebrook talks about the importance of voting and stumps for Bernie Sanders during a meeting of the Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association at Mt Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. (Jim Weber/The Commercial Appeal)

<snip>

A front-line soldier of the civil rights movement was in Memphis on Tuesday promoting the advantages of a Bernie Sanders presidency to members of the Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association.

Knoxville minister Rev. Harold Middlebrook, a Memphis native and former lieutenant of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., told the gathering of more than 50 black preachers at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in South Memphis that Sanders represented everything he had struggled for over the last 50 years, detailing the Vermont senator's plans to offer free college, reform the criminal justice system, raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and provide universal health care for all Americans.

"We've got to be concerned not just about popularity and names, but we've got to look at the issues and see who is going to really speak on our behalf," Middlebrook said. "And if we make a solid impression in Memphis, if Memphis wants to, Memphis can carry any election in this state."

Middlebrook, a Booker T. Washington High School graduate, is the retired pastor of Canaan Baptist Church in Knoxville and has spent his life involved in the fight for civil rights.

Locally, he helped organize marches and the Black Monday school boycotts in the 1960s. He was at the Lorraine Motel when King was killed in 1968.

However, his support for Sanders deviates from many other civil rights icons like U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who has endorsed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary elections.

A survey released last week by Public Policy Polling showed Clinton with a wide advantage among black voters in Tennessee, with 74 percent saying they supported Clinton to Sanders' 15 percent.

But Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, is seen as the candidate of choice for many of the nation's young people, scoring an endorsement this week from director Spike Lee.

"We need to elect a president who can bring young folk, middle-aged folk and us seasoned folk together to build a great nation again," Middlebrook said.

To make it impossible for others to dream of that better world and do everything they can to see it come to fruition, now...that IS a sin (or should be).

Realistic but a dreamer.

God, how I LOVE this man! I appeared on the front page of my local newspaper sitting between him and Wes Clark as the two were discussing anti-discrimination policy. I still go to his church from time to time to see him!

Guess I'll need to go back soon and give him a great big hug!!

(I'm a Knoxvillian, for those who don't know).

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm going to start socializing this!

Thing is that I used to be a print journalist so I have a shit-ton of newspapers. LOL. It might take me awhile to find it.

My Mom might have a copy easier to find - her secretary doesn't look like a miniature newspaper archive room.

Listened to their coverage of Nevada as my daughter and I were driving to Greenville, SC on Saturday to attend Bernie's rally there on Sunday.

In fact, Wes Jr. was standing just out of camera range in that picture to the left of me.

On edit: To clarify, I was friends with him. Haven't seen him in years, obviously, but he and his wife are about my age and our kids are about the same age. We used to talk frequently during the campaign.

Also, has he ever mentioned the Love Bus when talking about the campaign? And his dad singing Journey songs at the top of his lungs (and not very well) on the bus? Those were the days!

"We've got to be concerned not just about popularity and names, but we've got to look at the issues and see who is going to really speak on our behalf," Middlebrook said. "And if we make a solid impression in Memphis, if Memphis wants to, Memphis can carry any election in this state."

That would be Bernie Sanders as Rev. Middlebrook supports Bernie Sanders. He did not need to see him at a Civil Rights Moment in the 1960's to support Bernie Sanders as he knows Bernie Sanders REALLY speaks on the issues on African-Americans behalf.

"We need to elect a president who can bring young folk, middle-aged folk and us seasoned folk together to build a great nation again," Middlebrook said.

Rev. Middlebrook believes Bernie Sanders can BRING ALL AGES GROUPS together and African-Americans within those ages groups as HE said in the previous paragraph Bernie Sanders can speak on issues on OUR behalf.

Rev. Middlebrook is not worried if he SAW Bernie Sanders in 1960's at a Civil Rights Moment. He knows Bernie Sanders and feel his heart is in the right place -- and GUESS WHAT -- that is all that MATTERS.

So, yes, REALLY!!!

And neither will the queen's followers, who think Bernie is a fraud and a johnny-come-lately.

After all, Lewis never remembers seeing Bernie anywhere.
