Most Americans expect that Hillary Clinton would prevail against her leading GOP opponent in November, while Bernie Sanders’ chances are rated less well. The thought of Donald Trump as president inspires high levels of public anxiety.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll also finds Americans divided about the need for a third party in this country – but not so divided about a potential independent run by Trump, should he fail to win the GOP nomination. Fewer than a quarter say they’d even consider voting for him as an independent candidate for president.

With Trump as the GOP nominee vs. Clinton, 54 percent of Americans say they’d expect Clinton to win (42% think Trump would win_Bill USA); among registered voters (a more GOP-leaning group), Clinton has 52 percent support. Clinton’s seen by much wider margins as beating Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. Sanders, for his part, is seen as beating Cruz or Rubio – but potentially losing to Trump.

she has many. It has a statement that she would beat everyone this November, and that Bernie would lose to tRump.

1-I think Hillary would win over any of the republican candidates, I have said so repeatedly. But it wouldn't be easy and it would definitely be a drag down on the ticket. I know you don't like it, but she does not excite the base of the democratic party and a chance to vote against her would pull republicans out of the wood works.

We have seen the attack dogs hounding Hillary Clinton for a couple of decades. We all need to remember that with many people if you repeat a lie often enough they will begin to think it's a reality. THis works with, sorry to say it, many people (most are known as "the GOP base" but they are not limited to that group).

Nobody knows this better than the GOP. They count on people being programmable to win elections - well along with voter suppression (and, in a pinch, the Supremes to abort an election and choose who the 'winner' is). It seems many people are blythely oblivious to this fiendish facility of the GOP in their enthusiasm for their candidate who nobody doubts (in Democratic circles) is a good man. The Dana Milbank article could serve as a good medicament for those enthralled by reveries of Sir Good-at-Heart being victorious over the monstrous malevolence of the GOP - if they are open to his knowledgeable advice (and entreaty?).

When there are a baker's dozen of Republican candidates, a poll attempting to predict actual head-to-head contests is useless. This poll, reflecting the public's expectations is arguably useful.

There are also, as I mentioned, voter polls which suggest that Clinton fares better against some or all of the Republican candidates. They're just as useless. But they exist, so "every" poll showing Sanders dominating the Republican field is demonstrably false.

In those nine matchups, using poll of polls results, Sanders does better than Clinton against the GOP all nine times.

The top post is an unsubstantiated pipe dream desperately trying to hold her supporters. If Hillary is so much more electable, she should be clobbering Sanders in Iowa and New Hampshire and doing better than the GOP rivals. But she has been unable to do that in any of the above. It's no contest. Sanders is the more electable candidate.

They have volumes of Clinton lies, flip-flops and scandals to remind voters of. That history has a number of people locked in and hating her - no matter what. She can never get really high in the polls because she has an established ceiling. The GOP have lots of daily ammunition for the general election that they have not fired to cut her down. They'll reply her lies to the Benghazi family members, her lies about her emails, sinister spin on the Clinton foundation, etc - not new material for those that follow the news but new material for voters who do not follow the news closely. And more than a reminder for all. My fear is they'll render her toxic.

Bernie's trend is a pretty steady upward climb. A lot of folks don't know him well so he's lower in the national polls with lots of room to soar. Like New Hampshire and Iowa, he's going to rise as his campaign comes to the primary states that follow and he gets the national exposure he's started to receive for making the race with Hillary competitive.

The thing you don't have with Bernie that you do with Hillary is a lot of lies, flip-flops and scandals. He's like Obama in that way. There's more Teflon to him as a candidate. Obama had a flaw in the eyes of racists - the color of his skin. Bernie has a flaw in his platform - describing himself as a Democratic Socialist will attract GOP ads describing him as a commie. A percentage of the GOP will buy that just like a percentage of the GOP were racist against Obama. But he can prevail over that like Obama prevailed over the color of his skin.

It's hard for the GOP to go after Bernie on many of his policies in a serious way because they're nearly all very popular with the American people. Bernie has volumes of real facts to go after the GOP - to counter punch and make those shots stick.

In a character contest, Bernie wins over Hillary handily. The favorability and untrustworthy polls tell us that many times over. Bernie has a better record on judgement.

I think Bernie's the best horse in this particular race.
