Todd Akin’s Senate bid regains momentum

Todd Akin’s Senate bid regains momentum

This week the representative will speak to influential pastors and campaign with Phyllis Schlafly

BY DAVID A. LIEB, ASSOCIATED PRESS

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Written off by many in his own party a mere month ago, Republican Rep. Todd Akin has been slowly rebuilding his Senate campaign after apologizing for inflammatory remarks about pregnancy and rape.

Now Akin is approaching a critical week that could determine whether his re-emerging campaign can gain enough momentum to put Missouri back in the battleground column as Republicans attempt to win control of the Senate from Democrats.

Tuesday is the deadline for Akin to get a court order to drop his challenge of Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. But Akin says he won’t do so. Instead, Akin plans to ramp up his campaign. He’s holding a fundraiser Monday with former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. He’s addressing a potentially influential group of pastors Tuesday morning. Then as the drop-out clock ticks down, he’s kicking off a statewide bus tour for his Senate bid that will include venerable conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly.

“I believe the state of the campaign is looking better and better,” Akin said Friday after engaging McCaskill in their first debate and then rallying on the Missouri Capitol lawn with supporters of a newly formed women-for-Akin coalition.

he is doing well enough and has evangelical support which will give him money. Also, if he were to step down and the GOP Central Committee selects a replacement your going to have lots of hard line conservatives who will be so mad because they feel Akin was railroaded that they will probably sit out the senate election.

that angry conservatives may sit out the election if Akin drops out and a replacement is selected. That could happen.

Besides evangelical support, a little-known PAC or a newly-formed one could come into the picture with big money now that Rove & Co. has stunk up the media outlets by claiming withdrawal of financial support.

for Akin to drop out and avoid a stiff financial penalty. Until that date, Dems are sort of keeping a low profile.

It's pretty clear by now. And most of the ballots have already been printed anyway, particular military/overseas ballots.

But one of the reasons it's obvious Akin is staying in is that he has a big event with Newt Gingrich tomorrow.

He's also getting help from nutty right-wing talk show host & Brietbart editor Dana Loesch, with some support from Mike Huckabee as well.

he'll have to pay thousands to reprint the ballots, as I understand it. That's why, if he's still in the race past the 25th, he's in it to stay.

or something-or-other (standard republican line). He's also said he's soooooo sorry he offended, blah blah, and that he now knows he was misinformed about rape and blah blah not causing pregnancy or some such republican blathering. I think that's about all but I haven't googled to find anything else.

I don't think he's mentioned it other than saying he should have used the word "forcible" instead.

Which has served to remind me each and every day since the original comment of my own rape. Yes, I am a rape survivor, and I thought I had put that way behind me, dead and buried, haven't thought about it in years. But no. It is all back. Why? Because, for the first time, I have learned that, according to Akin, it wasn't rape at all. See, once my rapist let me understand, in words and with an extremely painful twist and yank of my arm behind my back, I went completely limp and completely mute, except for all the tears pouring soundlessly down my face.

unpopularity -- and I suppose the media doesn't care to tell us about it -- is the fact that she won't do earmarks. Well, what do ya know: her honesty and her refusal to be corrupt could cause her to lose her Senate seat. (Off-topic, but important.)

Well, maybe not, but you get the idea. He has his fun and THEN coverts to Catholicism when biology hints that he's at Last Chance Gulch. Can't fault Akin for his choice of strategists to consult. After all, look how brilliantly Gingrich's own campaign went earlier this year.

Oh, wait...........

Never mind.

I think and hope all he!! will break loose with Akin still in the race and national publicity focusing on his whacknut beliefs and that this is the type of fool republicans want running the country.

And I think that, despite everything, McCaskill will win. Sometimes I hate her and sometimes I love her, but I gotta say she truly represents her state and the people in it. Akin, instead, will be all republican 24/7.

There have been a lot of features on this on the UK news channels in the past week, (including Akin's weasel-worded "apology&quot . Many linked the story to Respect Party MP's George Galloway's bizarre definitions of what is and isn't rape with regard to the Assange case - I like George a lot, but he lost a lot of my respect over this story.

Hard to believe the story gets more coverage in the UK right now. But after the 25th I hope it goes nuclear here, with an emphasis on the Akin-Paul Ryan connection regarding the definition of rape.
