I got my first hide. All because I have some crazy idea that we should learn a lesson from what is happening in Europe instead of letting it repeat itself here.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This post is completely islamophobic and hateful. This has no business on this site. He is actually voicing support for a grossly discriminatory piece of legislation because "muslims have demonstrated they cannot be trusted in this regard."
Despicable.

(468 posts)Why would they ignore whats happening in Europe just because its Europe? We should be trying to learn from what is happening in Europe. Not dismissing it.

(18,219 posts)I tend to agree with you although I would not have put it quite the way you did. I say that if (big IF) Muslims are ignoring US laws and enforcing their own sharia laws instead, that is a problem that should be dealt with, however, I also think that Irvine TX is over-reacting at this point and are just trying to fan the flames of fear. I also fear when the Christians impose their ideas into the laws of this country.
Wonder who alerted on this. Hmmm.

(9,290 posts)You shouldn't broadbrush an entire group like that. You need to put in quantifiers to limit it only to the people who are doing those things. Even Bill Maher and Sam Harris repeatedly said, "not all muslims" when they made their points.
As far as the rest of your post, I don't know what is going on in Europe; but I do know that there are right wingers who are pushing idiotic ideas like Birmingham being a "no go" zone in Britain.
So I am going to reserve judgement on your particular claims till I get more evidence and accounts from people who actually live in Europe. When right wingers start proposing things that sound completely unbelievable, they usually are.
Not to accuse you of being a RWer, but rather to explain why I am skeptical.

Female Genital Mutilation in the UK.

These aren't crazy right wing websites. Yes people are responding in extreme ways to what is happening. However I also have zero doubt that if the UK muslims could turn the country into a theocracy they would.

(20,018 posts)By any means necessary.
The single worst thing that could possibly happen to the human race is another millennium or more swimming around in the septic tank of religious domination.
Another comet to wipe us all out would be better than that.

(468 posts)You nearly match my own thoughts. I think about what we could have done or do with all the effort we've put into and will put into religion. Just think of all the hours and money individuals spend on religion that if they had spent on research we might have wiped out some horrible diseases or developed more efficient clean technology. All that time and money spent bowing down to an imaginary friend is effectively wasted. Religion is holding humanity back and I oppose its encroachment on secular advancement in all its forms.

There is an old Chinese proverb that says you can only be as peaceful as your neighbor allows you to be. In forums such as this you can only be as rational as the hair-on-fire contingent will allow you to be. I've only served on six or seven juries in my short time here, but I've seen some real doozies where people are accused of the most heinous atrocities because they posted an opinion contrary to the opinion of the alerter. There apparently are a handful of people here who take extreme offense at the drop of a hat. That's a shame, really. (Watch me get hidden for pointing out the obvious)
On edit: Full disclosure: Upon deeper investigation, I'm quite sure I would also have voted to hide the particular post in question.
Now if only we could get posts hidden due to use of a logical fallacy! That would be something worth doing!!!

(26,663 posts)but I'm sure they won't be Muslim. Would the new law apply to, gasp, Christians?
I would have not hidden your post, but I would have responded. Show me a link, but I see some here, which I will check out.
I think this mayor and the state legislators are out of their minds.

(26,663 posts)the female mutilation takes place all over the world, and, yes, the parents should be held responsible under existing child abuse laws. The other is 60 people protesting liquor stores. Kind of like those who protest in front of Planned Parenthood, but they usually aren't Muslim. Where's the fear of Sharia law?
I accept that I could be wrong.
Where do you get your information?
Perhaps you should be more worried about what the religious loonies and right-wing crazies (often, it seems, the same thing) are doing in your very own Land of the Free.
I think Religion has a grip on your country that would shock and terrify your average European (who can tell the people they work with and members of their family that they are atheists without fear of losing their jobs or being cut out of the will)

(468 posts)I also see a bunch of great reasons to stop that particular form of crazy from getting a foothold here.
Why do you assume I am not just as strongly anti-christian? How would you come to such a conclusion based on a couple of posts? I am not allowed to be opposed to all religion?

(7,753 posts)Do you actually know "what is happening in Europe"?
I don't assume you are "not just as strongly anti-christian"
Of course you are "allowed to be opposed to all religion". I am, as are many here.
I'm just sick of hearing Americans pontificating about "what is happening in Europe", that's all.

(6,476 posts)We have more than enough opportunity in the USofA to address our own subjugation by the Christian privileged. Europe is far ahead of us in having perspective. They suffered for hundreds of years because of religion.
