"The poor cannot pull themselves up by their bootstraps because they don't have any boots"

I saw this quote tonight, painted on the wall of my parish's event hall. There were other quotes, too, and all had to do with poverty, but that one struck me the most. I thought the folks here would appreciate it - it was unattributed so I'm not sure where it's from, but it sums up my thinking on that odious axiom quite nicely.

...until they learn their lesson, and stop tripping themselves.

It's about as realistic advice as "go fuck yourself."
