It has come to my attention that many of our friends of the Christian Fundamentalist persuasion are having a difficult time discerning when life begins. They seem to be stuck on the slogan, Life begins at Conception I have been meaning to address this issue for them but have not been able to do such until now.
The real problem is that they have clearly failed to consult their Bibles on this topic but the answer to their question can be found in the following verse in Genesis.
Gen.2.7 The Lord God formed the man from the soil of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life,(1) and the man became a living being.(2)
The two key Hebrew words here are Nyshamah = Breath and Nefesh = being or soul.. So G-D created man from the soil of the earth which at that point he is just matter. He does not become a living breathing natural person until G-D breaths into him the life and soul of a person. This is a concept that is found although the Bible as in the following verses to name just a couple but there are many more.
Acts17:25 nor is he (G-D) served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives life and breath and everything to everyone. (3)
Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Hope this helps to clear up the misunderstanding that Christian Fundamentalist have
1. The Hebrew word נְשָׁמָה (nÿshamah, breath) is used for God and the life he imparts to humans.
2. The Hebrew word נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh, being) is often translated soul, but the word also refers to the whole person.
3. Grk he himself gives to all [people] life and breath and all things.

We are better off removing religious belief as the justification for policy, not using it to justify policies we prefer.

(146,218 posts)If it begins for one person at conception, so be it. If it begins at a completely different time for another, that's good too.
The issue is individual choice and privacy. I don't wish to argue with fundamentalists about their private definitions, as they as they apply them only to themselves.
