Vatican says trust in Church hurt by scandal

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY | Mon May 28, 2012 11:34am EDT

(Reuters) - The Vatican acknowledged on Monday that the worst crisis in Pope Benedict's papacy had hurt the faith of Roman Catholics in their Church, but denied any cardinal was a suspect in a deepening scandal over leaked documents.

The scandal exploded last week when, within a few days, the head of the Vatican's own bank was abruptly dismissed, the pope's butler was arrested for leaking documents and a book was published alleging conspiracies among the cardinals or "princes of the Church".

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told a news conference: "This is naturally something that can hurt the Church, and put trust in it and the Holy See to the test."

But Lombardi strongly denied Italian newspaper reports, quoting insiders who had themselves leaked documents, that a cardinal was among those being investigated over the scandal, which has been dubbed "Vatileaks".

1. I'd have thought that any trust in the Vatican was destroyed by the child-molestation & coverups.

IMHO, you'd have to be crazy to trust the Catholic Church.

5. Yes, the RCC is being hurt by the scandal.

But not for the reasons the RCC claims. It's the infernal stone-walling, not the leaking, that's digging Mama Church's grave.

9. I am not a Catholic, and I can't stand Pope Benedict as a person..

but calling him a 'card carrying Nazi' is misleading. He was a teenager who was conscripted into the Hitler Youth and briefly the army. He was 18 when the war ended. FWIW, he has spoken strongly against the 'Christ killer' libel against Jews. Can't believe I'm defending him on anything, but supporting the Holocaust is such a serious evil that I think it's necessary to be careful about such allegations.

As regards his institutional leadership of the Catholic Church, yes, that is appalling, especially his failure to deal robustly with paedophile priessts, and his pushing the church to the Right.

10. My grandfather was 18 yrs old when he fought with the Allies and helped liberate the camps.

We consider him a hero. The Pope was a member of Nazi Youth and was a member of the army that fought against my grandfather. This Pope has been great at scrubbing his past. Using the same excuses that every Nazi used to defend himself doesn't cut it with me. I agree that he wasn't a Nazi leader and he was young but joining the Nazi party disqualifies him as moral leader in my book. What kind of people follow an ex-Nazi as their moral compass? Conscripted? Doesn't that mean join or else? How many brave young men risked their lives while this coward took the easy way out?
I am not saying he should be shot at dawn but how dare he tell anyone how to live their lives?
