Related: About this forumBiblical Literalists have a point...
And it isn't a bad or foolish one either when you think about it... It goes like this:
If we start doubting the veracity of the Creation account, Noah's Flood, the Garden of Eden etc. Then what is there to stop us doubting the Resurrection etc.? If parts of the Bible aren't true then what if none of it is true?
As for Atheists being Biblical Literalists... we can't be, we don't believe any of it is the Word of God etc. However it is confusing when theists say it IS the Word of God... except for this bit, oh and that bit, oh and that bit over there and we aren't too sure of this bit, BUT this bit here, absolutely 100% real and true because I believe it to be.
Perhaps I am too naive when taking Theists at their word

(146,341 posts)They make up only a minority, though. Oddly enough, they are prominent in the Christian Right, which is trying very hard to be the political base in the United States. There's something strange about that. It leads to dominionism, which is a serious threat to our democracy.
You're right, though. People who call atheists literalists are not thinking logically at all. We don't believe a bit of it, as you accurately point out.
Christianity has largely become a "pick the parts you like" sort of Religion.

(20,775 posts)Eventually either a) it'll stop mattering to you altogether, or b) you'll start perceiving that "Theists" arent a homogenous mass, but people who vary greatly, with many different varities of belief, interpretation, faith, etc., and then you can start judging them on a scale from "batshit crazy and despicable" through "merely deluded and comparatively harmless" to "presumably well-intended but incomprehensible."
helpfully,
