It's not "sacreligious", it tells the story in a most entertaining way. I think of it often during Holy Week.
Caveat: I played in the pit orchestra for a production of it years ago. At one time I knew every song, every line. Was awesome.

I'm an atheist. My wife is an atheist. We usually watch the DVD on Easter Sunday. Go figure. We also attended a live production in the Twin Cities a few years ago. It was the last time Ted Neely performed the play.

I've watched it many times, including one time watching the staged play, the very last appearance of Ted Neely in the Jesus role. Where did you get the idea that I hate it? Or that "all atheists" hate it?

BTW, my favorite song in it is "Herod's Song."

No, though. It's the character that steals the show, both in the musical and in the Bible. He was a necessary part of the whole thing. Perhaps you are not understanding the plot?

The villain often is the most interesting. Hannibal Lector is a great example.

he understands his betrayal is something Jesus wanrs him to do.
His suicide is from his realization that he is a pawn.

In the context of the musical, it mirrors the evolution of the narrative we see throughout the Biblical story.
