Overwatch League Grand Finals brought 11,000 mostly booming fans to Brooklyn

This is amazing 11,000 paid attendees watching at video game match https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2018/07/27/overwatch-league-grand-finals-brought-11000-mostly-booming-fans-to-brooklyn/?utm_term=.104295ccb4d4

There had been trepidation in scheduling the championship at Barclays Center because, until now, all the teams had played the entire season in the 450-seat Blizzard Arena in Burbank, Calif. Could they really sell 20,000 tickets in New York, what one executive called “the capital of the universe?”

The crowd, announced as 11,000, might not have reached the desired number but their volume helped bridge the discrepancy. Spray-painted sidewalks alerted the unknowing that the Big Apple was at esports’ epicenter. Fans from Staten Island and California and Canada and South Korea flocked to Barclays. Jerseys in dark blue and light blue and orange and green dotted the streets and subway cars. For a 7 p.m. start, fans lined up at the door at about 2:30.

The rise of competitive video gaming has received even more fuel: ESPN, Disney and ABC are set to broadcast matches of the new professional league based around the game “Overwatch.”

ESPN, Disney XD and the game’s publisher, Blizzard Entertainment, made the announcement Wednesday in a joint release. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, although it at least will extend into the league’s 2019 season as well.

The broadcasts will begin Wednesday night with coverage of the opening rounds of the league’s inaugural playoffs on ESPN3 and Disney XD. The opening night of the Overwatch League Grand Finals from sold-out Barclays Center in New York will be shown on ESPN at 7 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 27. The concluding night of the finals will be shown live on ESPN3 and Disney XD the following evening, with a rebroadcast airing on ESPN2 on Saturday, July 28 at 9 p.m. EDT.

In South Korea, they fill up stadiums to watch matches. ESPN, The Washington Post and other organizations are following this. The minimum pay for an Overwatch player is $50,000 per year plus room and board. The minimum pay for a League of Legends player is $75,000.

The Philadelphia Fusion team is owned by Comcast. Kraft of the New England Patriots and Kronke of Arsenal/LA Rams each own teams.

I've played with a few of them during my MMO days. But lord I can't believe gaming competitions could be classified as sporting events now.

5. Arlington, Texas, Announces Plans To Build Largest Esports Stadium In U.S.

This project is going to be amazing https://www.forbes.com/sites/leeigel/2018/03/14/arlington-texas-announces-plans-to-build-largest-esports-stadium-in-u-s/#7fbf0f024131

Arlington, Texas, has announced plans for a 100,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art esports stadium that is scheduled to open later this year. The space will be the largest of its kind in the United States. Its design and location are oriented toward attracting competitive players, fans, and tourists from around the world.

The project is a collaboration between the city, architecture firm Populous, Esports Venues, and NGAGE Esports. On the surface, aspects of it will include the touch points that most people have come to expect of traditional major league sports facilities—space for competitive events, team training rooms and broadcast studios, retail and social outlets, and VIP hospitality areas. But the approach to developing this space in Arlington is focused on more than simply taking knowledge of what works in existing venues and wrapping it in the flags of Dota 2, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, NBA 2K, and all things esports.

On its face, the project will be transforming space at the Arlington Convention Center into something new and different, adaptive and reusable. Renovation and equipment investments are set to be repaid through lease payments, event receipts, stadium naming rights deals and other revenue-generating opportunities that emerge as esports grow in the coming years. Underneath and beyond that, though, is attention to objectives that have been showing real success in Arlington and nearby towns such as Frisco and Plano: improving quality of life is a means to improving economic opportunities and organizing partnerships for economic performance that feeds social pursuits.

It is not for nothing that the esports venue will exist in the heart of Arlington's Entertainment District, which itself sits in the middle of the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex and 10 miles from the world's third busiest airport. The district counts the Dallas Cowboys' home at AT&T Stadium, Texas Rangers' home at Globe Life Park, Texas Live! mixed-use venues, and Six Flags Over Texas theme park among the retail, hotel, restaurant, entertainment, and business operations within walking distance. More options are a short drive away—and so is the University of Texas at Arlington, which is home to the WNBA Dallas Wings and has an esports team that went 29-0 along the way to winning the 2017 Blizzard Entertainment Heroes of the Dorm National Championship.

I just don't want it to be classified as a sport. Competitive Gaming? Sure what not? That's been around since the 80s.

Dallas is becoming a hub of esports
http://www.espn.com/esports/story/_/id/23868444/dallas-fort-worth-becomes-second-capital-esports-us

From May to August of 2017, investors from various Dallas-Fort Worth sports teams, venture capital groups, real estate and oil companies separately came to terms to invest in three of esports' longest-tenured organizations. Between them, more than $105 million in capital has been contractually committed in acquisitions, investments and development projects related to esports.

And the growth has gone beyond pro teams, as well. By the fall, four local colleges will have school-sponsored esports programs; at the end of 2018, two esports-specific facilities will open in Frisco and Arlington; and by 2020, the Big D's first geolocated esports franchise, the Dallas Fuel, will leave Los Angeles and come home.

I am amused to see ESPN cover this area. The article is well done and covers a number of esports operations. This is big business

8. OVERWATCH PLAYERS INVOLVED IN TALKS WITH OLYMPIC COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS ESPORTS OPPORTUNITIES

Jul 2018

This blows my mind http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/07/20/overwatch-players-involved-in-talks-with-olympic-committee-to-discuss-esports-opportunities

Two players from the Overwatch League (OWL) are currently in Switzerland to meet with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) to discuss potential Olympic opportunities for esports.

Jacob "Jake" Lyon of the Houston Outlaws and Se-yeon "Geguri" Kim of the Shanghai Dragons are the two OWL players in attendance. The conference, which will wrap up tomorrow, is not about creating a specific plan for integrating esports into the Olympics immediately, according to Overwatch Wire. Instead, the two-day summit will focus on creating a relationship between esports professionals and the IOC.

According to a tweet from GAISF president Patrick Baumann, other attendees include Epic Games co-founder and VP Mark Rein, Blizzard Entertainment co-founder Mike Morhaime, and professional StarCraft II player Dario "TLO" Wünsch.

Blizzard recently announced ABC, ESPN, and Disney would be broadcasting the Overwatch League playoffs. The playoffs continue tonight, with the grand finals taking place next weekend at New York's Barclays Center.
