Can we get a do-over? 49ers players say they weren't aware of new overtime rules

"You know what? I didn't even realize the playoff rules were different in overtime," Juszczyk said. "I assume you just want the ball to score a touchdown and win.

"I guess that's not the case. I don't totally know the strategy there. We hadn't talked about it, no."

Armstead added that he first realized that the postseason overtime rules were different when he saw them displayed on the scoreboard at Allegiant Stadium.

"They put it on the scoreboard, and everyone was like 'Oh, even if you score, they get a chance still,'" Armstead said.

6. Those are the old rules

If the first team who got the ball scored a touchdown, the game was over. If the first team kicks a field goal, the other team gets a possession. Those rules were stupid.
The new rules are that each team gets at least one possession in overtime. If a team is ahead after the second possession, they win the game. If the game is tied after both teams have a possession, the game continues.
The NFL should just adopt high school/college rules for OT. Place the ball at the 50 yard line. Each team gets a possession. The only time kept is the play clock. If the game is tied after both teams have a possession, continue each team having a possession until someone is winning after a given round.

Mahomes' Chiefs in 2021 and that ended the game without the Chiefs even getting a change to get the ball too.

The NFL changed the over-time rules after that. The coach maybe should've make sure everyone was aware of that.

Even I wondered about the game ending in OT during the 2nd quarter and asked a family member about it.

but I'm beginning to think we've become a whole country of sore losers! Geesh... win or lose... and accept whichever happens to you with grace and civility. I think we gave out too many "participation" trophies. We thought we were building self-esteem; instead, we built a generation of people who expect it all to go their way all the time. Life ain't like that. People are headed for a rude awakening at some point. SMDH.

22. I think there is more to it than that.

We've created a mentality, especially in sports, where coming in second is as bad as coming in last. It's like the slogan "win or go home", which I find toxic. One winner, everyone else is "losers" and the stakes are high. Look at the coaching carousels, the transfer portal in college, and free agencies. We give coaches almost zero time to create a winning program and even if they do, players can defect at any time.

We've stripped all the sportsmanship out of sports.

I was always the fat kid who got picked last... if at all - the one with her nose in a book at all times. I honestly admit I know nothing about sports. But I know about fair play and sportsmanship from the wider angle. And boy, this ain't it, is it? Everything in today's world is rush, rush, rush... no time to do it right, but lots of time to do it over again, I guess.

That way the coin toss is less important overall. And its the 49ers fault KC gave them the choice. They could've chose to kick off rather than receive.
