FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets have a new starting quarterback -- Michael Vick.
Rex Ryan made the expected move Monday, benching the struggling Geno Smith in favor of the 34-year-old Vick, who will start Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs and his former Philadelphia Eagles coach, Andy Reid.
After more than a year of Smith's maddening play, Ryan finally ran out of patience with the quarterback, who was pulled from Sunday's 43-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills after three interceptions in the first quarter. He finished with a 0.0 passer rating.
It was the second time in four weeks that Smith was benched in a game, but this marks the first time in his career he won't start. He was named the starter as a rookie and has compiled a 9-15 record, with 31 interceptions.

Vick is already 34? Guess those years in jail make him seem older. Well, I'll be rooting for the Chiefs to destroy him ... literally.

(29,322 posts)Geno Smith was absolutely horrible. Those picks came early in drives deep in their own territory.
Vick made some mistakes but there was an overall offensive improvement. Also there are reports Geno was losing the locker room while Vick is widely respected.
Bills Were 'Bummed' When Geno Smith Was Benched in Favor of Michael Vick
We were bummed out when they took Geno out.
That's what one member of the Buffalo Bills organization said, per the New York Post's Mark Cannizzaro, after Sunday's 43-23 victory over the New York Jets.
It's not clear who said that, but it's hard to blame the Bills for feeling that way. After all, Geno Smith completed just two of his eight passes for five yards and threw three interceptions in about 10 minutes of play before being benched in favor of Michael Vick.
Smith had struggled mightily this year, but his performance in Week 8 was easily his worst of the season. Buffalo had a good game plan and executed it to perfection. Here's what Bills linebacker Preston Brownwho picked off one of Smith's passes in the gamesaid, per Cannizzaro:
"He was just eyeing down receivers. We saw it on film that he was just staring guys down. When we know if you do that were going to jump on guys routes, and we got some picks in the back-end with just reading his eyes.
We had Geno rattled and we tried to stay after him."

Harder to do than it sounds, but it's what separates the men from the boys.
