Heading down to train D. We go to two gyms, one after another. He does about 25 rounds combined; 12 of it in sparring.
A former sparring partner for Hasim Rahman helps train D. (For younger readers, Rahman knocked out Lennox Lewis to win the heavyweight title in April, 2001, then lost it in their rematch 9 months later.)
I'm trying to schedule a bout for 9-22 for my boy. There is an amateur card in Syracuse, and I want him to get 2-3 more bouts in before turning pro. Although he's getting in sparring, he can't unload at anywhere near full power -- in 50 years in boxing, I've never seen anyone with that level of punching power from any area fighter -- even going at 50% or less, he knocks people out cold, opens gashes, and my favorite, puts people down with body punches. So he needs a few fights where he gets a chance to really open up.
While I'd be happier if he opted not to fight, he is serious about it. (Nothing wrong about being a "gym rat." I expect he'll be on some televised cards in 2.5 to 3 years.
