Robert Griffin III makes history:

First rookie quarterback to win an offensive player of the week award after his debut game.

The NFL announced Wednesday that Griffin is the NFC offensive player of the week for his performance in the Washington Redskins' 40-32 win over the New Orleans Saints.

The No. 2 overall draft pick completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's victory -- making him the first player in league history to amass 300-plus yards passing, two or more passing touchdowns and no interceptions in an NFL debut.

Griffin is also the first rookie quarterback to throw for at least 300 yards and win a season opener.

His debut game as a rookie (for an expansion team's first regular season game) he beat the Bears going 17/23 for 250 yards and 4 TDs and no interceptions and a passer rating of 148.6. (RGIII had 139.9 passer rating)

had 250 yards off of 23 attempts for a 10.9.

Griffin III had 320 off of 26 for a 12.3.

I like that stat over QB rating because TDs and INTs can sometimes be misleading. A QB that is great at getting the ball down field creates a lot of easy TDs for running backs but that doesn't mean it applies to Tarkenton. He did have a great game, most QBs rarely have games that high in YPA.

I understand favoring the hometown player, I think Anquan Boldin had the greatest debut in NFL history though the stats probably don't support that. 10 receptions, 217 yards, 2 TDs.
