PINE RIDGE: Oglala Lakota enforce border checkpoints after threat from South Dakota State Governor

PINE RIDGE, South Dakota -- Oglala Lakota Police are manning protective roadblocks at the tribal border entrances right now, as South Dakota State threatens Native Nations over their roadblocks.
Oglala Lakota and Cheyenne River Lakota in South Dakota have border checkpoints to protect their members from outsiders bringing in coronavirus.

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem on Friday told Native American tribes they have 48 hours to take down road checkpoints they had set up to keep out unnecessary visitors because of concerns over the coronavirus.
The Republican governor said she would take legal action if the tribes didn't remove the checkpoints in 48 hours.

Two tribes in South Dakota -- Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe -- set up the checkpoints last month in an attempt to lock down their lands amid fears infections could decimate members.

and what offshore diseases did to indigenous people when first contact was made.

Tribal land is sovereign land. A tribe here got away with blocking a state road going through their land some years ago because of that. The roadblocks were short lived, but they got some better faith negotiations going.

Noem needs to work with them to streamline whatever testing they're doing so the roads aren't blocked back to Kansas instead of thinking she can issue proclamations from on high. Won't work.

to ask for or attempt to do anything unreasonable. And I'm 74 - but the history is older.

Just to be treated fairly and like human beings. That's all they ask

They have my support, for what it
s worth.

That they told her no or that they are trying to stay safe while she has placed the rest of her state in danger?

[I did a bit of legal consultation at Pine Ridge at the invitation of the Oglala Sioux. Long drive. Just not a normal thoroughfare at all. ].

the entrances to protect themselves? Does not harm anyone outside the rez to be denied access. None of her GD business.

Sounds like an ego issue, a power game. She wants to be big boss, doesn't like someone else making a decision without her permission. Native lands are self-governing. They are entitled to close down access, especially in this life and death situation.

I'm kind of surprised she hasn't tried to muscle the Mesquakie Settlement here into not doing a shelter in place order. And of course our own governor is trying to hook up Iowa with South Dakota since they're both being turned into Trumpian wastelands.

states are forming regional alliances. If this continurs, we might see these alliances become permanent in new governmental formations.

Glad I'm in NY and the northeast region.

Kimmy doesn’t want Iowa to join that since it’s run by people who don’t look at the orange fuck nugget as the second coming

14. Invading A Soverign Nation --Violation of International Law???

I am certainly no expert, but Sovereign Nations like those in control of the Lokota Tribal Lands lying within the state of South Dakota may well be entitled to redress in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague. If the governor orders armed police or National Guard units to enter reservation lands without permission from the Tribes (i.e., to invade these tribal lands) the Tribes might have standing to lodge a complaint alleging War Crimes or Crimes Against Humanity against the state of South Dakota, Governor Noem, and/or the Federal Government in the ICJ.
