US Navy welcomes 1st Black female Tactical Aircraft pilot

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The U.S. Navy has welcomed its first Black female Tactical Aircraft pilot.

“MAKING HISTORY!” the U.S. Navy tweeted Thursday in response to a post that Lt. j.g. Madeline Swegle had completed naval flight school and would later this month receive the flight officer insignia known as the “Wings of Gold.”

You were either qualified or not qualified that was the distinction. If you were shoreside and got into trouble your shipmates were there for you damn near unconditionally. On board everyone pulled their weight. There was no race at sea. That being said Navy pilots are the toughest of the tough. Naval aviation is the toughest teamwork of all. I hope this pilot flies well and long and ultimately can tell grandchildren some great stories.

Go Navy.
