How Trump Ruined My Relationship With My White Mother

This is an old article, truer today than it was in 2017. I will post the end, you should read the rest. It is haunting.

snip

I can’t sit and actively engage with a person—even if it is my mother, whose blood is running through my body—if she doesn’t care about me, my story or what I live through. If she can’t see past her own appreciation for a bigoted, dangerous man, who, because of the position people like her have placed him in, has the ability to do significant damage to my civil liberties, then I don’t know what place she can have, reasonably, in my life. It’s sad. It’s disappointing. It’s my mother.

Blood is not thicker than freedom and it’s not thicker than safety. Sometimes blood is just that, blood. I know my mother loves me; I’m her son. But, honestly, I don’t think my mother cares about what that really means.

Privilege is real. White privilege is real. It turns out, it can even trump blood. That reality is harsh. But it’s real.

Welcome to my reality.

I posted this in the African American Group. I haven't been back in a few years now. I loved this place, so many good kind members here. You were driven away, you are gone but not forgotten.

Fact: All Lives Will Never Matter Until Black Lives Matter Too.

One last time, sad that it had to be said on a Democratic board:

disrespected by anyone on this board is one of those things that causes me to shake my head and ask "Why?"

Anyone who is not moved by that excerpt is a member of a growing class of shallow beings who regard empathy as weakness.

Thank you for the post.

That it was necessary here and the Obama Group ( I was a host) was frankly appalling to me. People would post and whine that they had no clue they were posting crap in a protected group. Takes 1 second to see where you were posting...even with the warning, still they posted.

The two groups had one thing in common, African Americans.

Thanks for posting it in this group. I haven’t been around either, and only found this because it was still on the front page.

I'll admit I am an 'election year member', so don't know much what goes on around here the other 3 years, sorry to hear that crap like that goes on, even on a supposedly progressive blog.

But one thing President Obama taught me was the value and power of Hope. And I Hope that the horror that is 2020 opens up eyes and minds.

Peace.

Heartbreaking on so many levels. Trump has torn many families apart and no, he does not tell it like it is. I'm sorry your mother feels that way.

I think we all may have relatives that we have distanced ourselves from just in order to keep our serenity. Facts don't matter to a lot of people.

It's too bad that your mother doesn't realize she has an awesome son. That was a very touching post and you are so right in the fact that who we support says so much about us as a person. Thank you for sharing this.

And lack of understanding & empathy on so many levels. She was white, I am white but I understand deep, deep pain and alienation. Our differences were not based on skin coloring but on principles. Perhaps having such hurt in my life is why I'm more empathetic to every repressed & mistreated being.

Unfortunately, it isn't a unique experience. I hope he and his mom ( and many other parents) are able to heal their broken relationship in the future.
