Related: About this forumHe shows how the news talks about black people by talking about white people instead.
Just a heads-up: This is satire. This. Is. Satire. But that's why it's so freaking good.
Just in case this segment left you scratching your head, let's break down what it all means. This brilliantly scathing piece was meant to show the hypocrisy in how news media talks criminal behavior in black and white communities. And the takeaway is this:
Our media is incredibly biased when it comes to covering crime involving people of color.
How do we know? Let's look at three themes that play out over and over again.
1. Victim-shaming vs. killer sympathy
2014 was full of protests and demonstrations in response to unarmed black men, women, and children killed by the police without consequence. And while these stories were all over the news, too many focused on blaming the victims for previous unrelated criminal behavior.
When 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot and killed by a police officer in November 2014, a Cleveland news site ran the story "Tamir Rice's father has history of domestic violence" as if his father's past behavior was somehow relevant.
In April 2015, an unarmed Walter Scott was shot six times in the back by a South Carolina police officer. Although the incident was captured on film and the officer was charged with murder, NBC News ran a story following the incident titled: "Walter Scott Had Bench Warrant for His Arrest, Court Documents Show."
And after a police officer shot and killed unarmed John Crawford in August 2014 in response to a bad tip from a Walmart customer, multiple outlets ran headlines mentioning that Crawford had THC in his system.

I don't know if this has been posted here before, or even at DU, but this was too spot-on not to post, especially given some recent events!

(53,661 posts)If the media wasn't so BIASED they'd say the truth. I think these guys get a script of something to ignore the obvious!
But I haven't been to Huntington Beach in years, it was pretty laid back and quiet back then. That WHITE RIOT was GROSS!

(24,544 posts)Dayuuum! Let me just wipe the drool off my chin!
The video is too funny and I love how he states "you know, this isn't about not liking the white community. My best friend is white. My mother is white. My prom date in high school was VERY white. She even rode horses."
I just think it's sad that the first thing you see in this video is a great big disclaimer that this is satire. Because there was a lot of truth in that segment and it's a shame they had to qualify it like that to keep the racist fuckwits who think it's okay to analyze every other community in American culture this way BUT white people, off their tails.

To be quite honest, I don't think defining it as satire at the beginning was just to keep the "racist fuckwits" off their tails, but to keep so-called non-racist liberals and progressives watching. Without the disclaimer, I personally believe there would have been more than a few "non-racist" people who would tune out as soon as they saw the piece. It speaks to a passive bias many whites suffer. They are unaware of the treatment of others, even seeing news stories as inconsequential to perpetuating racial bias and hatred. It is "yellow journalism" at it's 'finest.'
I don't know if you remember the brouhaha back during Katrina when white people were "finding food" and black people were "looting food stores", but it is a very similar situation; how the "other" is portrayed is usually as "perpetrator" even when they are the victim (see: rape victims). When a black person is killed, we hear all the bad things s/he did in his/her life, when a white person is killed, it is a memorial service. This is a phenomena which I am sure you and most AA folk are keenly aware, but many white people are not!
This picture sums it up:
One would think in this day and age such bias would be very plainly seen as bigoted, and yet, it is not. It is a prime example of passive bias.

(24,544 posts)fighting OVER black people than FOR us.
These fools are in GD screaming and shouting over which candidate did more shit 48 FUCKING YEARS AGO. My comment in my OP in this forum about these dumb asses screaming that one candidate is better than the other because s/he participated in the March on FUCKING Washington over FIFTY FUCKING YEARS ago has just been verified, corroborated and vindicated by these simpletons in General Discussion.
I don't give a shit what either one of these people did before I was even a twinkle in my mother's eye. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE RECENTLY. Talking about Bernie Sanders' lack of anything on black issues is not the fucking same as calling him a racist and only a dumb shit with NO CLUE about minorities would think that it is. Telling me about who/what Hillary Clinton was doing when BARRY FUCKING GOLDWATER was running for office means less than a wet shit to me. WHAT HAS SHE DONE FOR US LATELY?????!!!
I am so sick of the stupid, insular, narrow, small minds stuck in these people!!!!! I am just fucking sick of it.

While not understanding completely, I do understand much of your frustration. They talk over you because they aren't concerned about you, expect in a paternalistic way. It is a flagstone of privilege. I have seen many posts and threads which are nothing but divisive and meant to sow the seeds of distrust. The problem with bigotry among certain progressives is they have convinced themselves and their sycophants, they aren't bigoted or aren't saying/doing bigoted things.
Not to make light of your anger, but this picture sums up much of what we are seeing:
Sadly, this is what it comes down to, they don't see themselves as being affected by our lack of rights, our needs, or our concerns.

Full of precious little gems like this piece of flaming shit:
So the model of social justice is not that the rich dont make as much and the poor make more, the model of social justice is that the rich make whatever they make, but an appropriate percentage of them are minorities or women.
And from the book review in that article:
A magnificent skewer of pieties, Walter Benn Michaels takes on the many manifestations of our devotion--from affirmative action, to the worship of multiculturalism, to the obsession with heritage and identity--demonstrating that diversity offers a false vision of social justice, one that conveniently costs us nothing
So sayeth the white person. The very FUCKING essence of privileged stupidity.

(53,955 posts)I understand because they are also using GLBT rights as a "talking point" and it has really pissed me off too. For me, I am more angry at those within my community sucking this down like it is gravy. Once again, a group that is so busy trying to convince everyone economics and social inequalities are completely entwined, they are doing their damnedest to make it sound as if social inequality is nothing but a distraction and all would be well if economics inequality were eliminated. Once social issues were a "wedge issue" between Republicans and Democrats, now, they are a wedge issue amongst democrats; though many people making these arguments, calling for purity, aren't even democrats!

(24,544 posts)I have not cared about DU for a long time. And I'm just sick of the shit here. It brings nothing to my life and I have learned nothing here except how stupid, hateful and small a lot of white liberals can be.
I am more angry at those within my community sucking this down like it is gravy.
I know exactly how you feel.

(53,955 posts)I used to get so fucking mad, I'll admit, there are still a few times, but they are few and far between now because I simply look at some of these "people" as nothing but agitators, hate-filled and ignorant (some are just stupid). I try to concentrate on those willing to listen, those who have something important to say, and those who I think of as my friends.
It doesn't mean seeing some of the bullshit we do isn't painful, because I seriously wonder sometimes if I am reading a "liberal" site or not.
FWIW...

(24,544 posts)Between the characterization of black people who support Hillary as "low information voters" who only support her because they "know who she is" and this level of really open blatant INSULTING of minorities and efforts to improve our plights in American culture all in an effort to boost Bernie Sanders is just too much.
I know I shouldn't let it get to me but you're right, it is so fucking insulting and it is painful. I appreciate you talking me down.
Behind the Aegis
(53,955 posts)For me, I was gobsmacked by the comment that Sanders was more familiar with racial civil rights than Obama. The insults are flying and it is sad how many people just...don't...get...it! I just popped in a thread about a Republican politician complete with "fag" jokes. Sure, they don't ever say "that word", but the comments are ridiculing sexual orientation. Try to point it out? "Oh, you're being too sensitive!" "That's not what I meant, and you know it!" "I have gay friends who would laugh at the joke and your insinuation my comment is homophobic." Sound familiar?
There is overt racism (other -isms). There are microaggressions. And, there is passive bias. It's the last two which seem to plague the left. Sometimes, it gets to be too much and all one can do is scream and rail against the bigotry!
