Crosspost in seniors too- My husband's Social Security benefits suspended

"because of your work"

We applied for early benefits ( age 64) in Sept. We have received three checks.
He had to stop work in August because he has/had cancer. He has gone through 33 radiation treatments and 3 strong chemo treatments. He had a feeding tube. He has not worked since August.

We have no idea if he will go back to work, but our plan was for him to collect SS and then work part-time. Probably make under the penalty amount, maybe a little more.

All I can figure out is they mistakenly think he was still working.

I filled out the appeal form with a cover letter. I put his boss's phone and his oncologist ( lol who is right next door to the SS office)

Anyone know anything about this process? I can't figure out why we got the letter in the first place or why they decided to suspend.

Thanks for any help.

and be sure to keep track of dates....the cutoff should be for the previous month's check, the check we get this month will be for December.
which is a problem when someone dies and then the poor family has to repay the previous month's check to Soc. sec.

Anyhow, they are most likely talking about information for Nov.

Also possibility they are trying to thin the rolls, so they bump a lot of people, and only pay attention to those who fight back...has been known to happen, esp. with Soc. Sec. disability.

So, yeah, fight it and make notes who and when and what when you call.

I hope you were aware that if you collect SS before your full retirement age, which for you should be 66, and you earn over the maximum allowed, you can lose money. My understanding is that it's on a yearly, not a monthly basis. Meaning if you go over the limit, $15,720 for 2016, next year, in 2017, you'll have SS withheld.

Since this is the very end of the year, they may already know he's gone over the limit.

Do contact your SS office ASAP.

A lot of people understandably find this rather confusing. I am sorry that your husband has cancer and is unable to work. I sincerely hope he gets well, and that the SS suspension was a mistake and will be rectified.
