5. I will miss him at about 2 AM. When the DU was very quiet.

He often had a pun for me in the wee hours of the morning when
I was too tired to resist his power. I think he appreciated my spelling errors.....they were a set up for him in a way. Vibes to all who loved him. Safe passage.

It's from a B Co. 2nd Bn (Airmobile) 501st INF. reunion in 2011.

A tribute to Bob was held on 7/15, with a flag ceremony and three-volley salute. His remains were laid to rest in the Bakersfield National Cemetery on7/21, also with a flag ceremony and three-volley salute.

As was stated during the tribute, above all, Bob was a patriot. He served his country both in and out of uniform, and he served it well.

Rest in peace, brother.

I was going to link up at on of the reunions but we could never work it out.
I would have loved to go to the ceremony. If you have any pictures of the marker or tombstone, I'd be honored to have a copy.

I'm glad he was buried at a military cemetery and with honors. He was a warrior and that is a fitting place for him.

33. Sorry About the Wine Bottle Photo

Originally, Bob's son intended to have Bob's cremains buried at Arlington National Cemetery, but he generously allowed the family to have the tribute and interment here in SoCal. The flag ceremony at the cemetery was very moving.

A headstone was ordered and is expected to be completed within six weeks. I would be happy to send you photos, either as e-mail attachments or via USPS. I have photos of the flag, Bob's jungle shirt (which he always wore with his 101st Airborne hat), Bob's awards from work, his military commendations, his books, etc.

One of the most poignant articles I have is a letter from USARV HQ. Bob had friends in an ARVN armored unit, and he submitted a request to be a troop advisor attached to that unit. The request was approved but he didn't get the letter until he was undergoing treatment at Letterman General Hospital in S.F. He knew that he would not make it back there to be with his buddies, and he was very upset.

Three of them even visited Bob in CA after he got married. They had to return to 'Nam, of course, and ended up in re-education camps. At least one of them survived, and Bob learned that he was working as a bank manager. Bob made three trips to 'Nam with his 2nd wife, and I hope that he was able to connect with Phoung.

That's very considerate to have him laid there. We made the same choice with my father who served also in the 101st ABN. Arlington was too far away for family members to visit so we chose one that was 2 hours away.

It doesn't surprise me that he was upset. Duty weighs heavy on men like your brother. It was apparent by his work with veterans, so I'm not surprised he'd be that way when he was on active duty. He was just taking care of his troops. That's what made him an outstanding leader and person.

If any of his Vietnam memorabilia that isn't divided up is left. I'd like to make a suggestion. Anything like pictures, awards, from the time he was in the 501st. Please send it to the 101st ABN Don Pratt Museum at Ft Campbell. They had a very large section on the A Shau Valley. I'd be glad to pay for it.

When the headstone comes is placed. Could you get a picture then? If it isn't any problem.

42. I didn't know Pinboy3niner, he joined while I was on DU hiatus,

but I did go into the archives and read alot of his posts and he was a great DU'er.

It seems that our generation is dying off and with it, those of us that served in Vietnam.

It's so sad when I hear about another fellow Vietnam Veteran leaving this earth way too early.
