Navy extends maternity leave to 18 weeks

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has given young Navy families something more to celebrate this July Fourth weekend.

In one of the Navy's most family-friendly actions to date, Mabus announced Thursday the service is extending paid maternity leave to 18 weeks.

The new policy, which takes effect immediately and is retroactive to Jan. 1, will allow women in the Navy and Marine Corps to take the time all at once or split it into chunks over the baby's first year.

The news came as a big surprise for sailors like Lt. Cmdr. Katie Hodgins, who had her first son in February.

I tended to cut my female sailors a lot of slack after giving birth, but not everyone is as much of a softie as I was. Good move by Mabus.
