4 ways Obama could limit U.S. gun violence

In the wake of the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting, President Obama vowed this week to "leave no stone unturned" in an effort to curb gun violence. "AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not on the streets of our cities," Obama said in a speech to the National Urban League. But the president offered no specifics on what he would do, and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney quickly clarified that Obama wasn't calling for new gun laws, just stepped up enforcement of existing rules. The conventional wisdom in Washington is that politicians don't want to pick a fight with the powerful National Rifle Association and gun-loving voters, meaning new gun-control laws have no prayer of passing Congress. If that's so, what options does Obama have to reduce gun violence? Here, four suggestions:

The Gun Control Act of 1968 stipulates that legal rifles must be "suitable for sporting purposes."

"Sporting purposes" like..

Hunting?

Or perhaps sporting competitions?

Those "sporting purposes"?

Item number two in the *cough* list would require new legislation- which goes against the premise of the article- unless the author thinks that the president can unilaterally decide to apply the GCA '68 to ammunition without congress. *snort*

Item number three would also mean writing new law.

Item number four? Let's circumvent the law-making process! *shakes head*

Let police officers confiscate...
...president has the executive authority to make....
There are plenty of things the president can do "without having to come to Congress"...
...prevent criminals, fugitives, and "mentally unbalanced" people from buying guns...(the quotes are not mine, thats how it appears in the article. my issue with this is who on the federal or local lvl gets to define "mentally unbalanced"?)

Its frightening when an article that contains such phrases is heralded as wonderful, without considering the future applications & consequences. President Obama will, however unfortunately, not always be president. I doubt you would be so comfortable with some future repub pres wielding such authoritarian powers.

It is VITALLY important that near-machine guns & mountains of ammo are available to the "tough guy" gun-relgionists.

Why?

Because they aren't "tough guy" enough to venture into public without carrying their Precious.

It's unbelievable to me the level of denial that so many Democrats are in w/regard to the political cost of dishonest/uniformed/feel good gun laws. For the 100th time posting this link, as true today as when it appeared in The Nation in '05:

are to end the failed drug war, reduce poverty, increase opportunity, increase wages, and increase access while de-stigmatizing mental health care.

Changing the fucked up police culture wouldn't hurt either.

14. All rifles combined account for ~2.5% of murders.

Fear sells advertising, and fear sells legislation, but rifles are simply *not* a significant contributor to homicide in this country.
